Or at least better AVRCP implementation.

I suspected as much reviewing the new API list but just validated: Skip forward and back now working from bluetooth headsets!! BINGO!!!!

Perhaps an explanation of what in the hell VARCP is might make your thread a bit more easy to understand?

If you have to ask...

Seriously. Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) is the part of the bluetooth spec that defines how remote devices interface with the iPhone to control the ipod functions. For years, Apple has resisted full implementation of this INDUSTRY STANDARD for some strange reason.

They finally listened to our long suffering demands and added this ability which every other smartphone has had for years.

Specifically - up until this release, you could not skip forward or backwards using the buttons on your BT headset. Now you can. So simple yet so wonderful for those of us that use the ipod function with the phone out of reach (such as jogging or on the bike).

Just tested with a second headset, a Southwing stereo headset.

Thanks for explaining that. Really. I hate looking stuff up sometimes.

Great to hear this!!! Will make listening to music in my car so much easier--won't have to look down at the phone to change tracks.

Finally! Maybe now I can actually use my Steering wheel controls to control my phone. Any sign if it also supports Text Messaging over Bluetooth, thats my only other gripe using my iPhone with the Sync system in my car.

Sweet. Now used car salesmen in pleated pants everywhere can skip forward and back on their iPod just by rooting around in their sideburns.

I don't think so. Text messaging while driving is illegal in many areas and should be illegal everywhere. Studies have shown it's more dangerous than drunk driving. Keep your eyes on the road!!

Also works with my Motorola hands free car kit. Yes!!

Hallelujah, it's about time.

Now if we can get it playing nice with my Jeep's nav system again like it did in 3.x, I'll be a happy man.

Finally! I have been waiting for this to work on my bt car stereo for so long now.

As your username says, give me a break. Text messaging while driving is only being attempted to be enforced because it's a measurable act, much like drunk driving or reckless driving. If a cop passes me or glances at me and notices my repeatedly looking down and away from the road, I could be a whole number of things: eating, changing the radio station, trying to flick a bug off me, looking at my GPS, etc. So when I get pulled over, how is he going to accurately check what was happening without relying completely on my word?

He can't. But he can look at your Sent messages and see if you just recently sent a text.

Texting while driving is as dangerous as doing all of the above. They're just singling this out because they (think they) can enforce it. But they can't. Especially when you have phones that do much MORE than just text e.g. GPS or controlling the music playing. So even if I do have a message recently sent within the past two minutes, I could've just been changing the song at the exact moment he saw me, therefore I got a ticket for nothing.

And to just add to this whole rant, don't tell me that it's more dangerous than drunk driving. Drunk driving has many MANY more consequences than texting while driving. Texting is a very temporary impairment, often 10 seconds at most. Drunk driving is the entire duration of controlling the vehicle. That's like saying walking to get the mail gives you more risk of getting skin cancer than laying out by the pool for thirty minutes.

It's a feature that reads incoming texts over the speakers and allows you to respond using voice prompts, something the iPhone doesn't support. Hence Text Messaging OVER Bluetooth. But either way, Texting and Driving is only as stupid as the person doing it, thats the way I see it, be smart about it.

awesome! i always wondered why i couldn't skip tracks with my BT and iPod touch. i'm glad it's fixed, but like so many other "features", should have been there to begin with.

does the update take care of the syncing issue with the bluetooth as well? i havent been able to get my iphone 4 or 3g with with iOS4 on it to sync with my car radio at all. thats the audio protion anyway. the phone part syncs and works flawlessly.
