don't just ignore a post because you don't understand the technical aspects of it...

also, the 2006/2007 is not equal to a 2008 mac pro.

grats domukun, sorry people don't read what you post...

If you read what he posted, you'd see that it's not at all what people asked.

People are asking about the Apple 5870 in a 2008 or 2006 Mac Pro.

The only way it would not work is if is if the main logicboard was modified or the pcie bus was already maxed.

That's great news!

When can we expect to see your test of the 5870 in older Mac Pro's?

I have a 2008 Mac Pro and am eagerly awaiting the results! :D

My 2008 Mac Pro is itching for a new GPU (HD2600 at moment) and if the new Apple cards work OK I'll be ordering one ASAP.

Working on it this morning. Should have test results posted before noon PST.

Just booted a 2008 8-core Harpertown Mac Pro with the Radeon HD 5870. I'm running game test. Results soon.

Here's an appetizer. I'm benchmarking Portal First Slice (which all my remote testers are using).

At 1920x1200 with these settings:
Model Detail = High, Texture Detail = High, Shader Detail = High
Water Detail = Reflect All, Shadow Detail = High, Color Correction = Enabled
Antialiasing Mode = None, Filtering Mode = Anisotropic 4X
Vertical Sync = Disabled, Motion Blur = Enabled

The 6-core Westmere 3.33 (2010) with Radeon HD 5870 = 233 FPS avg
The 8-core Harpertown 3.2 (2008) with Radeon HD 5870 = 250 FPS avg
The 2008 model is faster!!

ZOMG! :D:D:D:D

barefeats confirmed that 5870 "works like a charm" in 2008.

They will provide details soon :)

I was originally thinking of flashing a 5870 for my 2008 MacPro, but with my edu discount, I can get an Apple branded 5870 for $404... or a PC card from Newegg for about $390. Might as well just go for the Apple one. Only problem is when the hell are they going to ship them??

Hey barefeats,

Would it be possible to also take a picture of the 5870 installed in a 2008 Mac Pro? I'm interested in seeing how it fits.

From what I can tell in some of the pics I've seen, the edge of the fan assembly in the 2008 stops around the end of the 1st drive bay sled, while in the 2009/2010 models it stops somewhere in the middle of the 2nd drive bay sled.

I'm wondering if the 5870 card would be "loose" in the 2008 since there seems to be more room in the case.

Radeon HD 5870 and 5770 Caveat.

There is a caveat when using the Radeon HD 5870 or 5770 on the 2006-2008 Mac Pro. The two Mini DisplayPorts are "negative function" no matter what adapter you have. Only the dual-link DVI port can be used to drive a display on the older Mac Pros.

And, no, Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapters will not help.

For hard core gamers with one display, it's not an issue. But for those of you looking forward to connecting two or three displays to the 5870 or 5770, you are better off with the GTX 285 which has dual DVI ports.

The 2009 and 2010 Mac Pros do support the Mini DisplayPort. That's probably why Apple officially supports the 5870 and 5770 only on the 2009 and 2010.

Wow, that's quite unfortunate.

I'm using one 23" aluminum Cinema Display with DVI, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal for me, but it kinda stinks that I won't be able to run dual monitors in the future with the 5870. That and GTX 285's are now super hard to find and their prices are crazy jacked up due to it being discontinued.

I wonder why that would be the case though. I haven't seen anyone complain about the mini-DisplayPort not working with the 4870 card in a 2006-2008 Mac Pro.
