Did not work on previous generations from what i remember maybe im wrong

True, but the 3rd gen didn't have buttons on it's case.

I'll assume you meant "3rd party headphones with playback controls." They should work without fail.
If you did indeed mean just "3rd party headphones" (without playback controls), then any pair that fits into the 3mm port should work fine.
