I realize there are some similar threads on here, but none that I know of with this exact problem. My AOL mail was hacked sometime in the very recent past and is sending all kinds of crap to everybody I have ever conversed with over email. I can find the spoof emails that were sent in my AOL mail's sent folder, but not in my mail app's sent folder. However, when I get a returned mail notice, I get the notifications both in my mail app and aol mail. I have already changed my AOL password to something stronger and have also changed the security question. I did this at about 4 pm CST this afternoon and now over 5 hours later I am still getting "returned mail" from the mail delivery subsystem. I've gotten about 50 today so far. I have called apple care twice and AOL 3x and neither one has offered any solutions that have helped.

I've had that account since I was 15, so I would really like to keep it if possible. Are there no other options? If there aren't what's a good option? I don't like google mail but I guess it doesn't matter since I just use my mail app 95% of the time. I thought the AOL acct was cancelled in 2004, but come to find out today they are still charging for service! That's six years of charges for accounts we haven't used. Ridiculous!

Time to switch. Someone stole my ID on hotmail. Then they sent an urgent request for money to everyone in my Contact list. They said I was stranded in London and asked for money to be sent to that city.

I couldn't log into my own Hotmail account. And nobody seemed to be 'home' at Microsoft to rectify the password problem.

A close friend who has set up more than 100 websites advised me to scrap Hotmail because of their poor service and lax SPAM and security surveillance. He set up a Gmail account. My weekly SPAM dropped from about 200 to 1. And I created a complex password using CAPS and numerals.

There is a reason Hotmail is free. Since you pay for AOL, you should not put up with this.
