Autodesk today announced that its AutoCAD for Mac 2D and 3D design software is now available with a 30-day free trial for all users. Officially announced about six weeks ago, the release marks a return to the Mac platform for AutoCAD after a nearly two-decade hiatus.
AutoCAD for Mac has an intuitive interface that will feel familiar to Mac users and takes full advantage of Mac OS X, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of Multi-Touch gestures for pan and zoom on Mac notebooks, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. With native creation and editing of files in the DWG file format, AutoCAD for Mac also supports easy collaboration with suppliers, customers, clients and partners regardless of platform. AutoCAD for Mac is also integrated with AutoCAD WS, so users can also upload and manage designs in their online workspace directly from the desktop and easily edit and share those designs through a web browser or Apple iOS devices using the free* AutoCAD WS mobile application.

The companion AutoCAD WS application for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch was released in late September and offers users the ability to view and work with AutoCAD DWG files.

AutoCAD for Mac targets professional users and carries a price tag on the order of $4,000, but the 30-day trial should offer many of these users ample opportunity to test drive the application before committing to purchasing the software. Autodesk also offers an educational licensing program which allows free access to AutoCAD for students using the application for personal educational purposes.

Typical Autocad user: Oh, you can get it on the Mac now? Whatever. <goes back to work>

Chances are, if you Mac is 2 years or older, you won't have an acceptable video card to run it.

It won't run on my 2008 top of the line Macbook...

Pretty nice, wonder if its fully compatible with the windows version (the output files that is.)

AutoCAD truly was the last big name holdout keeping people on PCs when I worked at a Specialist 2 years ago. This is awesome news.

CAUTION all you Mac people. Autocad has a horrible history with the fairer platform, or at least one user. Years ago we purchased 2 seats for our office worth thousands of dollars. 3 months after that Autodesk abandoned the Mac platform without a whimper. I called and complained and they said, sorry, you're out of luck. Plus, Autocad on the Mac was always substantially behind the windows version, the ignored step child. I have since moved on to Vectorworks on my Macs and we love it! Vectorworks has also been adopted by a lot of architects and engineers in our area and I would never go back to Autocrap. Just be careful, if it looks like a snake and rattles like a snake....

You had your chance and you made your choice AutoCrap, now sleep in it

Man, engineering students have it so good these days. I used to have to reserve a seat days in advance to get a timeslot for an AutoCAD station, and the moment you sat down the clock was ticking.

A free copy for the full three years of the course. Nice one :)

There's a lesson to be learned about depending on an inferior platform.

This is great news, I know a lot of young architects that have been waiting to get the heck away from Windows and buy a Mac but AutoCAD has held them back. Goodbye Windows and your horrid PC's.:D

New Mac Pros, here we come!

I think this confirms, that we will see new Mac Pro models together with Mac OS X 10.6.5 in approximately 2-3 weeks. ;)

Even some stores in my country say, that some of the Westmere Mac Pro models are "discontinued", which usually means, there will be new models in a few weeks. It is somehow strange, that we do not see appropriate reports here on MR. Very strange! :confused:

Wow. I have no idea that is how much the software cost. The last I remember about CAD program that cost was in the $1000s.

I guess the software isn't for the amatuers/beginners.

They just refreshed the Mac Pros back in August. Don't think we will be seein any "new" models any time soon.

Psh I'm not paying $4000 for this.

Oh wait, student license. 3 years free. Ah yeah. :D



Also, it would probably be worth most of you taking a $200 class at a local community college so you could get the free license. You'd save $3800.
