Jerky film on VLC

Hi, I have downloaded a film and the playback on VLC is a bit jerky. The picture and sound are great but it just seems a bit jumpy. Looking at the time on the payback it seems to skip a second or so every 3 seconds. So as an example at the start the timer goes: '1s, 3s, 5s, 6s, 8s' etc.

Just wondering if someone knew whats going on and if they could help me fix the problem
