I'm doing some research into the addictive nature of iPhones and would love to speak to anyone who feels they are addicted to their iPhones.
Has it caused problems in your relationships?
Does your life rely on iPhone apps organising it?
Do you get anxious when you notice the battery slowly dying?
I feel like I'm getting more and more addicted by the minute so would love to see if others are too!

Yes to all those questions sadly. It's been like that since I got my 2G.

It can answer yes to all, ESPECIALLY the relationship one. Here's the story:

My gf is not a big fan of cell phones at all and since the first day that I bought the iphone she didnt like it. She hated the fact that at dinner and breakfast i would just fiddle with my new toy and completely ignore her and make no effort at conversation (hey, who can blame me! the thing has so many apps for everything! the crossword app is ADDICTING). and in bed at night we used to read books together and cuddle but i would stay up all night watching podcasts and browsing the web on my side of the bed.

what really set her off was the time we went to her parents house for thanksgiving dinner and i was supposed to carve the turkey so i looked up an app for turkey recommendations and wine pairing but i got so sucked in that i forgot to actually carve the turkey! i ended up sitting on the phone in my chair for over an hour and didnt talk to anyone-i even forgot to grab a plate until someone brought one to me (i forgot who) and her one aunt apparently got mad when they said grace and i was not paying attention. but come on! we do thanksgiving every friggin year! who cares if one time i was on my phone.

after that she tried to start a rule that no iphone were allowed in the house or she would break up with me (we were engaged, together for about 5 yrs at that point). whatever, i said, if u cant take me for who i am then we shouldnt be together. she ended up not enforcing that rule and stayed together with me for a few months. we finally broke up when she approached me bc we didnt have sex in like months so she wanted to with me but during sex (no joke--this really happened lol) i got a push notification that my WeRule crop was ready to be harvested...needless to say i couldnt keep going with her and had to harvest my crop. after i did that and some other things, about an hour later she wouldnt continue and we went to sleep. turns out she was crying and the next morning she packed up! lol! whatever.

wow, that's a pretty sad story man, i feel bad for your ex. what you did to her was the equivalent of what a drug addict does to their loved ones.

in fact, that story sounds so ridiculous that i almost don't even believe it.

oh come on...

i guarantee you that when you first got your new iphone you were the same way man. im a gadget freak at heart and we just werent a compatible couple because we didnt have the same interests. i need a girl who likes apple products as much as me.

Yeah that! The only way that story gets lamer is if it's true.

Now don't get me wrong my wife can't stand when I pull out my phone during dinner but you have to have some boundaries.

Fair enough, but there's a big difference between being glued to it for a few hours while importing contacts, settings, etc, and blatantly ignoring/disrespecting your loved ones for months at a time with it as well as between liking apple products and ignoring people because of them.

edit: this actually just reminded me of the WoW kid who tried to put a tv remote up his butt when his mom cancelled his account. so that should give you an idea of what this sounds like to me

No.
Not even remotely. If I had to rely on an app to get my life organized I'd be pretty screwed. That and no developer could make an app that would organize my life :p
No. AC Charger, Car Charger, 4 sync cables and 2 backup batteries. Never run out of juice.
I think we're all addicted to one point or another with our iPhones. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here.

lol! i gotta give EvilGreg props for sharing that story, because I believe it and it made me laugh!

i could totally see that happening, but i hope your iPhone condition gets better :)

poor girl :)

I guess one of those Japanese robot girlfriends will be your perfect match!
You'll never have to have sex and she will be emotionless, perfect!

I think everyone in this thread is taking my comment out of perspective.

I want to start by saying that, I am a geek and I love shiny sexy gadgets. The iPhone is the first time I've ever felt like I have everything I could ever need in one little brick shaped device. The holy grail if you will.

My (ex)gf never respected my interest in gadgets, she liked things like hiking and watching movies or playing games together. That didn't ever interest me (it used to a little...but that was before my eyes were opened to constant data being available to me any time I wanted).

The fact that she couldn't understand why I wanted to play on the iPhone (between jailbreaking/hacking with it, and social networking, and crossword games) showed me that she wasn't aware of my needs. After she split up with me it took me a while to figure this out, but I stopped being sad once I realized that's the problem!

Every once in a while I'll bump into her on the street but as we're talking I pretend to get a text message and take out my phone to see if shes changed and she always gets that sad look on her face. She hasn't changed and that proves it. She told me that she hates the iphone and not me because the iphone killed the man she fell in love with, but i say, get over it! I'm an apple guy at heart!

I don't think we are taking your comment out of perspective because you are just reinforcing our(or at least my) thoughts here.

this is really sad

She is sad because you haven't changed.

I love my iPhone 4 and I love Apple Products. But I don't let it control my life to the point where my family and friends start getting upset with me.

I just want to thank evilgreg for sharing that! It was the funniest thing i have read in a while. If you loved this girl and were engadged to marry her you wouldve put the phone down every so often. Going forward you need to get this addiction in check or forget about being in any type of relationship.

Huh? He's got no relationship problem. He and his Iphone are getting alone just fine, thank you. :D

When I first met my GF she had an HTC Tilt, and I had an 8gb iPhone 2G, she swore up and down her HTC was superior in every way to the iPhone...so, after about a year, she wanted a new phone, I let her use my upgrade discount ( i added her to my phone plan) and surprise, she gets a 16gb iPhone 3G. Shortly after, I sold my iPhone 2G and upgrade to a 16gb 3G as well. A year or so later she decided she wanted an HTC again, so she gives her iPhone 3G to her dad, and he agrees to buy her an HTC Tilt II. She uses the Tilt II for a week and decides she cant live without her iPhone, and returns the Tilt II and I let her use my upgrade discount again to 32gb iPhone 3GS. So now six month later, I used her upgrade discount to preorder my 32gb iPhone 4 and give my iPhone 3g to her mom. Needless to say, both of us and her parents are addicted to our iPhones, but manage not to let them run our lives....

So basically she wasn't hot enough to keep huh? lol

On a serious note, you don't want a gf that has the same interests as you do, trust me! I actually like the fact my gf isn't into gadgets as much. Although she likes her iTouch 4G, she isn't on it as much as I would be at dinner time or anywhere else.

But the iPhone affecting your sex life is ridiculous! She better not have been hot or it was TOTALLY your loss bro!

evilgreg, that is the single saddest thing I have ever read, there is passion for something you like but when it turns to obsession then you have a problem.

I simply cannot imagine someone being that obsessed with one product I have heard of the weirdos playing WoW or other warhammer games, but come on it is only a effing phone.

I wouldn't worry about your ex and if she has 'changed', she's already normal - you're the one who needs your head checking.

lol

wow, that is beyond sad and pathetic.

I feel really sorry for the girl that wasted her time with you. But on the bright side, here's hoping that she found a normal human.
