otherwise, you'd say:

Exactly my thoughts. I pray they wont go the ugly route. The classic iPhone is breathtaking even compared to the 4th iteration.
I've been thinking the same thing for a while now.. it all comes down to $$$$$.. plastic is always cheaper/lighter than metal, no?
I'm pretty sure these are covers like we now have, these are not the actual iPad backs. we often seen spec mockups of covers that may or may not reflect private knowledge. in this case I suspect not and it is just an idea of the new covers appearance

Because I come here to read articles and real insight on the rumors, not dozens of posts that are basing their opinions on incorrect assumptions.
And I wouldn't say that most SKIM the article--I, for one, along with many others who did not post the same misconception as you...read the entire article.
In addition, I read many comments--and if you would have done THAT...then you could have seen your mistake prior to your post.
And btw...emoticons don't necessarily dictate actual face of the poster at the time of posting.

If you will recall, there have been previous attempts to 'predict' Apple's devices and produce shells/covers for a new model iPhone/iPod Touch that were completely wrong. In trying to jump the gun, they relied on rumors as to the inclusion and placement of things like cameras and connectors, only to scrap an entire production run because they weren't even close.
If you ask me, this seems more like another one of those guesses rather than something based on Apple's specs. I know Apple does give some lead time to design and produce peripherals, but this seems a little too soon to be anything more than a guess.

I could see the SD card use for transferring pictures to/from the iPad. I do not see Apple allowing it as memory expansion. The SD format works in thought over the USB flash drive because it is widely used in cameras. Pop it out of your camera and load the pic's onto your iPad...
The future should be camera's with bluetooth transfer, eliminating the need to plug the SD card in...

Can be stronger also, deflecting damage rather than bending and deforming.
Plastic bumpers on cars can withstand a good hit and spring back into shape.
I know there is a sort of snobbery about Plastic, but like any materials there are good and bad and cheap and expensive plastic.
Plastic is such a generic term anyway. There are many synthetic materials that have superb properties that could all be classed as plastics.

I haven't read through the 10's of comments about people not reading the article thoroughly, but has anyone asked yet if the dimensions of these cases are identical to the current iPad?

Is that a usb port slot next to the camera slot on the blue cover?
I suspect that may be an NFC radio area (total guess) like the top part of the ipad 3g.
or perhaps all ipads will be 3g capable, and that is an area for 3g/gps/nfc antenna.
again: a Wild Ass Guess (WAG).

Dropping the screen makes it thinner and lighter.
Thinner and lighter = cooler.

Plastic is cheaper, lighter, easier to manufacture......perhaps better wifi/3g connection
.....next keynote speech will boast about weight and lower price...and maybe better wireless/3g connection
.....will put the iPad in the hands of more people....
.....will satisfy content providers that are making contracts with Apple
.....might have a tiered product line like the MacBooks. iPad, iPad Pro....but highly unlikely

Ahhh... I'm surprised no one has chimed in to make a comment about the fact that we're seeing potential cases already!
Based on the past, that usually means we are within 2 months of new product shipping. If these are real, then I think we'll hear about the new iPad in January with a Feb. delivery.
Just in time to take all the wind out the competition sails after CES. Makes sense.
