I have a firewire port on my new MBP and my USB ports are pretty much taken with my cellphone charger and my usb hub (for mouse/keyboard/other hard drive).

Can i just get a usb to firewire cable to just plug in my new external to that?

Also, the HD is portable so does firewire provide power the same way the USB powers the hard drive?

Cheers-

No, because there are no real "USB to Firewire" cables.

Simply buy another USB hub and use both if you need more ports.

Interesting solution from Seagate for those drives, putting the interface converter outside as a replaceable part.

Glad it worked out for you.
