I have never jail broke either of my iPhones, because I dont care for the services that it provides. But I would like to figure out what jail breaking the apple tv does. Can anyone explain this one to me in layman terms?

No just for porn, but how do you get to play Internet videos via your ATV2?

@Hook'Em2006, Apple TV has a few restrictions that come to mind:
-Only able to service codecs within iTunes's restrictive list (MOV, MP4). Jailbroken ATVs can use a program called XMBC to play many more, like a VLC for ATV.
-ATV has no Hulu (no current jailbreak solution)
-ATV has no iOS apps (no current jailbreak solution)
-ATV can't do other stuff - Weather, sports tickers, etc. (options available with a jailbreak).

So, if i understand you correctly, you cant do Hulu if you jailbreak?

Will say that I jailbreak my iPhone 4 for a while.... till I foolishly upgraded the IOS... I was testing out the wifi hotspot thing for my iPad using my iPhone.

I can see the temptation of jailbreaking the ATV2 - until Apple sees fit in providing an app store for ATV2. Till then I am happy with the limits of my two ATV2's....

Yes you can, you just need to add a repo in xbmc and it enables hulu. Check out this link... If you read thru it will explain how to accomplish this...

I too have a JB iphone 4.0 that i did with jailbreakme.com

totally awsome

Won't go into particulars..but its really worth it if you live in the states and are kinda broke..

:)

def worth it...after a few headaches i now can acess my Hardrive from xbmc and no longer have to convert files to use in itunes....I hope I am making sense..

meaning i used to have to encode all files from avi>mp4 with quality loss to watch ATV2 on my big tv...

So no longer do i have to encode avis> mp4 which took forever and would loose audio and video quality sometimes with audio skips that were annoying..

Now it seems to be clean sailing once i can get my band connectivity set up properly so I dont buffer during HD m4k video files....

but the avi's and mp4's blueray dvd rips are doing just great!

The plugins and some of the shows don't work anymore on XBMC.

I'm thinking about un-jailbreaking my ATV till they get more on the ball of opening up these doors correctly.

The jailbreaking is affecting performance of streaming videos from iTunes and other things so it's becoming not worth it to do all this fenagling for what you really want your ATV to do..and that is access a lot of content and have it stream GREAT! without buffering issues and freezes.

Am i missing something here? I jailbroke my atv 2, installed Plex, XBMC, and Nito TV. it is the most garbage collected in one place ever. On a 16 mbps wired connection, about 90% of the vids dont play. If they do, it's the crappiest quality, if you're lucky enough for it to be seen at all.

Nitotv is worthless. Not one video from plex plays.

It is actually laughable that anyone considers this a benefit to Apple TV. yea, let's watch a movie of some kid in a theater, barely able to see, coughing, talking and enjoy it!

Must be 12 yr olds who just think it's cool to modify something. I'll restore back to normal. I'd actually rather pay a couple bucks for great quality than click through a bunch of broken links, watch half of the movie, out of sync, find the other half an hour later and watch that in the worst quality possible.

If you are thinking about jailbreaking your atv, TRUST ME, it is a horrible move. There is NO benefit. Yes, you can install 3rd party apps, but that's the problem, they're 3rd party. They are worthless and not working. Just leave it - believe me, you will want back the time you invest.

I do not feel like writing what is already well detailed here but your problems are on your end and clearly your lack of understanding on how to use the various applications made available to you after a jb. Your advice is incorrect and your experiences are unique to you and not universal. My XBMC, content access and media playback is flawless without quality or performance degradation issues.

Jb'ing an Apple TV gives the device Apple should have built. The best of what Apple had to offer and what is openly available on the market. YMMV but education on how to use something before trying to use it goes a long way in avoiding misunderstanding and frustration.

You really are clueless :eek: maybe you need to learn a little more before you understand how it works once jailbroken.

Nito TV is for loading software on to it, it's not a TV channel :rolleyes:

Plex works just fine if you know how to set up your computer properly,a lot of people use ATV flash which makes the whole job a little easier & comes with quite a few benefits.

A lot of people use it to play non converted films from their computer, HD quality just without the hassle of converting them to MP4's.

I don't really use Plex or XBMC but i do use the ATV Flash Media player all the time

I've jailbroken my ATV2 a couple of times before and installed XBMC, but for the last 6 months or so I have been running stock.

I saw some thread on here about installing hulu on the ATV2 so yesterday I jailbroke. I bought the Firecore black software package. (season pass makes it so easy). There is now something called Media player on the ATV2 and it plays my DVD's that I have ripped into video_ts files and ISO files on my windows home server. I had problems with some of these files with XBMC. I was very excited about this, because my wife didn't like running XBMC over the ATV.

Now I am in the process of separating my non-porn movies with my massive porn collection.

:D Always an issue on shares TV =)

Jailbroken Apple TV is just so much more of device.

* Play pretty much any video/Audio format (using Plex, XBMC or Media Player)
* New plugins (Hulu, comedy Central, Web browser, Wether, RSS feed readers)
* Add/Remove Menu Items
* Skins
* App (soon to be release to the public, now only available to some undergrounds testers)
* Bluetooth (Add Keyboards, Mouse, Headphones)
* Enable 3er party remotes

:D

I think you should, ATV2 run iOS, smaller, and when jailbroken is just so sweet =)

If you ever in Atlanta, GA I invite you to come check out my setup, I run Plex on 2 Apple TV (and on the Living room I run a Roku box because i want 1080P there), all my movies, shows and music stream to it perfectly, high quality 720p, 5.1 audio, no pausing, no choppiness.

no I am not 12yrs old and i Do think that hacking and modifying anything that run software is not only fun but it give me way more for my money, i do mind paying more for something that i can get with a little bit of clicking. If you are able to read, you should be able to avoid broken links and a bad experienced.

Hacking is not for everyone (and I personally like it that way), we are better off without "some" people. But please try to avoid calling other people child or immature just because they do stuff your mind is not able to understand.

Fail. Stop using handbrake to transcode AVI and MKV to MP4. That takes hours. Use MP4Tools to pass thru video. Takes minutes to convert a 4GB 1080p video.

Only use handbrake for DVD->Mp4.

Don't need Hulu nor XBMC since I can convert any AVI to Mp4 in seconds.

Search ebay under "apple tv" and you will see hundreds of jailbroken atvs listing all the stuff the new untethered jailbreak had done for the atv. I just bought one for $130 from an ebay seller who does nothing but buy new atvs, jailbreaks them with hundreds and hundreds of channels and the sells them free shipping.. They are brand new and you can register on apple. He's just jailbreakinfpg ios. If

So, if i understand you correctly, you cant do Hulu if you jailbreak?

I have a new atv jailbroen and have hulu.
