Apple Launches MacBook Pros with Thunderbolt, Quad Core CPUs, AMD GPUs

Now that the new MBP's are out and a lot of people will be getting them. Where are people typically selling their used ones? I know there is always ebay and craigslist, but are there any other decent places?

Uhhhhh... no it doesn't. Battery life on average have moved up to 5-6 hrs for laptops in general, and these laptops undercut Apple's prices by 25-40%. ASUS laptops start at 6 hrs and go up to 12 hrs. Same with Thinkpads, Dell XPS series, and many of the new Acers. When you start comparing laptops in Apple's price ranges, 7-hr battery life isn't nearly as impressive as last-gen's 10-hr.

I have a 2010 MBP 13 and love it to death, but let's not kid ourselves. With each generation, Apple seems to squeeze more cash out of its customers with less impressive upgrades.

And it's not just the gamers that want/need serious graphics cards. Aperture uses that card, CS5 uses that card and a ton of other apps use it as well.

I don't buy the "there is no space in the 13" rethoric for one bit. Especially with Sandy Bridge where the integrated graphics are on the same die as the CPU.

For everthing else it's a great update. I just don't get why the 13" is such a second class citizen. Not everybody wants a big laptop like the 15"/17", but they do want the power.


*the lack of a higher res screen is the worst part, why doesn't the 13" have one if the MBA has one ?? It makes ZERO sense. Especially because they're not offering it as a BTO.

I totally agree with everything your saying. But the thing is like you said, screen res.

For a few dollars more, you can get a Quad Core in the 15". 13" is the ideal size for me as well but the 15" is blowing the pants off of the 13". I wish so bad that they would have just put the higher res with a Quad Core in the 13". It's is sort of maddening.

/Cough/ *Thunderbolt, why haven't people dropped the LightPeak moniker crap? I doubt it will be a small niche, it will probably catch on great. I'm planning to order that Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt equipped RAID once it's available!

The SSD will make a huge difference only if you're reading and writing to the discs a lot. I don't know a ton about Photoshop but I know in Final Cut Pro you are constantly rendering to the scratch disc. In that case you see a huge benefit in using SSDs. Again, I don't know a lot about Photoshop or how often that cache of yours is accessed or to what extent.

If you do opt for the SSD, buy it after market. Buy your MBP with the standard 750GB 5,400 RPM drive and then buy a good SSD from someone other than Apple. To my knowledge, OCZ and Corsair make good ones. Apple uses cheaper/slower OEM SSDs and overcharges for them, so you'll get a faster and cheaper drive if you buy aftermarket (even more money saved if/when you sell the standard 750GB HDD).

Thats funny, I'm constantly surrounded by friends with their new laptops that usually only get 4 and maybe 5 hours max.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Apple has really tried to get realistic battery estimates, the rest of the computer world really hasn't. I don't trust what their websites say.

It's also ridiculous to say that most laptops have moved into the 5-6 hour range, seeing as most laptops sold aren't anywhere near high end and resemble the "lets throw this crap together and ship it" manufacturing method. It seems the cheaper the laptop, the less battery life you get out of it (I constantly see friends with 4 cell batteries, and it scares me that companies even make those).

What the hell are you guys doing that you need more than 7 hours of battery life? Seriously. I get 4 to 5 hours on my early '08 MBP and I feel like that's a lot. Sure it's not 10, but come on. 7 is a long ass time on one battery. So what do you guys do that you need more than 7 hours worth of battery life?
 
With the next Mac Pro update I could have Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 (custom) and eSata (custom) all in one 😀😀😀

That's what I totally don't understand. Unless the 6490M doesn't come in a 512MB version, but then then should have chosen a different gpu. $1800 for only a 256MB GPU these days seems a little ridiculous--and I really never complain about apple pricing.

Especially when the integrated uses 384MB.

I wonder if they put in the "Pentalobular" screws. Might make it a little tricky to put in your own SSD.

I can't wait to see some benchmarks for the new 13"...hopefully they aren't too depressing
 
Why are you guys whining about 7 hours? The quad cores get way better battery life than my Vaio F's i7 quad does (in part due to the sandy bridge processor being a fair bit more energy efficient, I suppose).

It impresses me enough! Now I know where to go next time around.. the sad bit is it's almost exactly the same weight now (6.6lbs - I think that's up from 6.1lbs? My Vaio weighs 6.9lbs!)

well the 15" is my "workstation" - design/photography, while i need to move through the week couple times, 13" air is great, sure, but just not for "some serious work"
 
Ordered a high end 15 this morning...then cancelled it.

For my needs, I just can't justify the price 🙁

Decided to order 500 worth of parts from newegg for a gaming pc and an 11" mba refurb. Should have my gaming and mobile needs covered and an extra 800 in my pocket for booze and hookers.

For those that did bite, enjoy that quad tastiness! /jealous

Thanks! Guess I'll just buy it stock and upgrade everything aftermarket. So I've never installed a new drive in one of the unibodies before is it difficult?

Besides, comparing to Windows-based laptops is a little bit misleading since Windows does use more power. Using BootCamp, one will get the same 6 hours with MBP that many PC laptops have.
 
I bought my first mac in April 2010 trying to replace my xps desktop and its unbelievable. I bought it from the apple store and upgraded the 15" with the 2.66 I7 with 8 gbs of ram. I use it for large format graphics in photoshop with some of my vehicle wrap files exceeding 5gb file sizes and it doesn't miss a beat. What im getting at is I hear so many complain about the 5400 and 7400 hard drive. Mine came with the 5400 and I can't notice a damn difference. The main thing I do that really that works is I use a 2tb external firewire 800 as my scratch drive for photoshop. Hope this helps. Also i run Illustrator at the same time with no quad core. I think this model will hold up for a long while
