Funny, I emailed AYL on amazon to cancel my order which has not shipped 6 minutes ago. I just got an email that it shipped now. WTH? I really want to just reject the package now.

That's why I deal with good old American sellers
AYL American Yoobao Limited not A Young Life probibly related to someone at yoobao

I can't seem to find any reviews on if the offical apple smart cover that does the same thing like this yoobao. Wondering if laying the cover behind the ipad 2 causes the device to shut off too?

I tried messing with the magnets. See if there were anyway to block the magnetic fields so it wouldnt turn off when you flip to the back, so far nothing.

So I dont see how yoobao is going to figure out how to fix it unless they make the front cover into a tri-fold like the apple version.

I owned a smart cover prior to Yoobao and it did NOT shut off when the cover was in the back and I had it like that a lot. I think I read that the magnet on the Yoobao may simply be too "strong" if that makes sense. I wonder if the magnet was an afterthought (after they saw Smart Cover) and they didn't really test it beforehand.

..What worries me more than the smell is the red dye...I tried sticking the thin cardboard behind the iPad thinking maybe it would help weaken the magnets (to keep it from shutting off when folder). It of course didnt work but when I pulled it out, I saw 2 light red "smears" on it. If it dyes my brand new iPad, I will seriously cry.

...So, does anyone think the dye might stain the iPad?

I just noticed the black dye on my black case. :(
After removing the plastic bag & foam from the leather case, I used my lint roller to pick up some visible dust on the interior (by laying the opened case flat down). I noticed black dye coming off from all the black interior: the underneath of the flap (folded under the inserted ipad, bezel - the edges wrapping the ipad), the back of the small leather piece attached on the string along with the tag. I'm afraid to put my ipad inside the case now..

All the grey portion seems okay though.

That's good to know I won't have a problem returning it. Thanks for the info.

The smell is SO disgusting that I truly don't know how Yoobao gets away with this. I can smell it all the way across the room! Even touching the case leaves a "film" on my hands, and my hands reek of the case after handling. This one is going back, for sure.

Very disappointing. Without the magnet issues and smell issues, this case would be a winner. As it is, it's a huge loser.

Hi dear customer,

We are sorry to hear about this issue, we have brought this to the immediate attention of the manufacturer. During the first ipad version, the previous case did not have this issue. We spoke to the manufacturer right away and they will change the glue and hopefully make any other necessary improvements. Not sure how long it will take but we will make it right.

The magnet being too strong and sleeping the iPad is potentially much more than just a nuisance. I thought I read somewhere Apple says to keep magnets away from the iPad, and presumed when they came out with a magnetic smartcover it was OK because the magnet was likely tested to be weak enough not to harm the electronics or interfere with any of the radio signals, battery, compass, etc.. How in the world is a magnet that is strong enough to send the field through the iPad's back to the front to trigger the sleep function safe to use around the iPad without at least interference, if not damaage, to the iPad's functionality?

I am one waiting for the smell to go away, after a week it is 80% gone. However, I may be having second thoughts about even using this thing because of the magnet issue.:(

I was so happy, when mine finally arrived - but the smell caused a bad headache and my father even got dizzy. I went to a leather specialist who told me that the smell would maybe faint, but not go away completely. Therefore I'm returning it. :(
What a pity, it was the best looking case for me so far. Maybe I'll go with the Saddleback now, although it's a little to bulky for me. I won't go free-climbing with the iPad, I just want a nice leather case with a cover that can be folded into a writing/viewing stand. :-/

I recieved my case last Saturday and just returned it today. I had many of the same issues that other users have posted. The case had a chemical smell when first opened; it remained after a few days. It fit the iPad 2 well, with all ports and controls accesible. The leather feel was also good. The flap cover did not stayed on securely and the magnets would not activate the sleep/wake sensor since the cover was not properly aligned. When the cover was opened and behind the iPad it would activate the sensor at times and put my iPad to sleep. After checking out several cases for my new iPad 2, I really wanted to like this case. Unfortunately, it seems that others are having the same issues so I decided to return mine. That being said, customer service from AYL (bought through Amazon) was good and they immediately send me a return label when they heard about my problem.

Exactly my issues. Waiting on a return label from AYL.

So they have this thing called a smart cover that attaches to the side of the I pad in the same manner as one of those magnets that pickup cars at the wrecking yard and you think these little tiny magnets will hurt the I pad? Last year apple told people not to use cases with magnets to get you to buy their case and not 3rd party cases this year they surround it in magnets, I'm sure that apple just put any old magnets in their case and I pad the put smart magnets there so that other case makers would have to be as smart to make a smart cover otherwise that would not be to smart

so, after 2 days "airing out" on the yard, the smell is now minimal. its doesn't stink as bad as the first day i got it which literally made me cry.
i'm still thinking if i want to return it coz it kinda grew on me.. i'm not having major issues on the magnet when it is folded behind the ipad. yes, it sometimes sleep/lock it but that is only if i put the two edges together and pinch it.

i got some photos.

I just got an email from Kay at AYL this afternoon stating this:

Hi dear customer,

Thank you for your purchase.

The newest version is expected to come out this month. The manufacturer already has the solution to improve the case and are currently working on it but they need some time to get the new materials. We have been contacting the manufacturer daily for updates and will continue to do so. This is common when there is a new product that comes out, and based on customer feedback, we have the manufacturer improve on the product right away.

We believe the newest improved version will come out earlier and before our set date of 4/30, but this is a conservative estimate, we don’t want to make an unreliable estimate or guarantee. For example, if the new version comes out in 2 weeks, we will ship the item right away. Your pending order will be shipped with the updated version of the case.

We are glad to cancel your order and issue a full refund anytime if you decide not to keep it. If you would like to wait, please let us know. If you received an email saying the order was shipped, please disregard it, the pre-order is pending processing.

Please contact us any time if you have any questions. Thank you for your time and understanding, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Kay

I ordered this case more out of curiosity than anything (I'm currently using a Cygnett Lavish case that I'm more than happy with) so we'll see what improvements, if any, the latest batch of Yoobao cases bring!

Hopefully the new improved version will also have an odor produced by Chanel rather than Exxon.

When did you contact them? I sent them a message via Amazon early this morning but no reply yet...

Ugh I am SOO torn! Love the Yoobao but hate the flaws and the smell! Going to return the current version of case for now and will wait for the revised version.

I didn't really contact them. I ordered a Yoobao case on 4/2 from AYL through Amazon and had an original ship date of 4/4-4/5. I didn't follow up on the order status despite the fact that the original ship date had come and gone and today I got a shipping notification from Amazon and this email from AYL (telling me, among other things, to ignore the shipping notification).

I have no problem waiting for the new Yoobao v2 cases to ship, particularly if they fix the odor and magnet issues!

How to remove the bad smell?

About the bad smell, explanation has been given by yoobao company, the smell is come from the glue; the leather case was packing by plastic bag immediately after finished, so that the smell cannot be removed.

Solution: carry out the new leather case from the packing, and put it beside the window, the smell will go, about 5-7 days.

And yoobao company is using a new glue in the coming manufacturing , which is more environmentally friendly, less smell.
