Hi,
Mac Mini just got a 8X superdrive......maybe PB's receive this too, but I want a new graphic card, more battery life and a substantial price reduction......I'm not asking a lot, am I?
I sold my 17" 1.33 in december and I'm waiting ever since...
best regards and good luck for all of us

You know what? You're right. Let me just load up iTunes on this 2.5 Ghz P4 and that'll show Apple what real performance looks li... ... oh, wait, that took 10 seconds, and you're not right at all.

??? Since when did apple optimize their software for the PC platform ? Load up word on a Mac vs word on a PC and you'll see the exact opposite. The point is, don't use platform specialized or specific or platform optimized softwares to compare things. At least use programs that are not obviously optimized for a certain architecture. Photoshop is okay, what with Adobe recently getting sick of apple pushing them around and optimized the thing for both PC and Mac instead of just Mac, and a while back, on their website they had a claim with a graph demonstrating how the latest P4's smoke the G5's out of the water doing some filtering tricks. THe latest photoshop can use both SSE2 and AltiVec, and when you put it that way, it can be used as a more "fair" program to compare.

Also, the new FreeScale G4's still has the good old gripe of the weak FPU unit, refer to arstechnica for a detailed analysis, where the G4's FPU is weaker than the P4's per clock, so your software had better been optimized for AltiVec.

let's all just chill out and look at some porn or something. isn't that what the internet is for anyway?

yeah, that, spam, endless pop ups, ads, virus, scams, etc....

All these comments are beginning to sound like the very old debate about Mac vs. PC. PC will never win... end of story. Let us continue our whining for new PowerBooks! :p

says AppleInsider.com....hrmmm. like i've said i'm new to the mac world, waiting for this upgrades to switch. have retail stores "rid themselves of all display models" before minor upgrades before, or ??? (to those naysayers i'm not saying something big like a G5 or anything, i'm just curious as to what apple has done in the past)

Where is that news/rumor? Displays are not being sold right now? What could that mean in relation to PowerBooks?

like i said, on appleinsider.com it was posted today, now its the third update from the top... http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=854

displays as in the powerbook display models, the powerbooks they have out in the store for people to play with, not as in monitors.

I was just viewing the source code on the apple.com/powerbook/ and I was just curious to what the last lines could be?

<!--BEGIN AVENUE A-->

<img height="1" width="1" alt="" src="http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_g5_powerbook">
<!--END AVENUE A-->

Has this always been there? If so what could it mean (I only know minimal html and site building techniques).
sorry if this is old news...

Good catch - I would be curious to hear what the explanation for this is as well. Or has this been there for a while, and is meaningless? ;)

According to my quick five minutes of research, that section did not exist as of May 2004. The Internet Archive does not feature any of this tag. Check here for yourself:

http://web.archive.org/web/20040512081125/http://www.apple.com/powerbook

The source on that could have been modified, but I sort of doubt it.
What an interesting find...

Wow, if this doesn't ignite a fire, nothing will.

Okay, comparing the May page with tooday's, I see one notable change. In the right-hand column, the picture of the Apple flatpanel display has been updated, and the blurb about the DVI-to-ADC adapter removed. This change was probably made when Apple released their latest displays (when was that? WWDC?). The "Avenue A" section in the source code could have been added at that time.

Also note that a Google search for "Avenue A" turns up a marketing agency as its first link. Maybe Apple's?

Wow!! Very interesting - seems like something that would aid the page in switching to the G5 premade one??

Question.. if they do this and have the units read to place on display, this means they should be available to buy in the store right away...... right?

One would think so, but Apple is rarely known for its timely product releases. Given the pent up demand for the G5 PB, if that is indeed what this is, then I'm sure they wouldn't dare announce it unless they had a fair amount of the suckers ready for sale.

:eek: Oh, sorry, hahaha. I was kind of confused being that they just "updated" Apple Displays by lowering prices.

This is going to get the thread moving again....

Could be a traffic analysis as suggested, a 'dummy name' maybe? Anyway this is very interesting... I feel like someone's playing with us... :rolleyes:

Since it's only a hidden 1x1 gif, I'm guessing they are doing some sort of traffic analysis? Although it's not really a good method for that. Any ideas?

Googling for atmdt.com reveals a number of different pages, including several relating to Apple. One URL with an atmdt.com address redirects to a PDF from Apple regarding Airport Express. Other links refer to rebate coupons, etc. Several hits have to do with traffic/referral trackers.

It could be for monitoring traffic, but why name it g5_powerbook? It doesn't trip on any search engines, so the filename could be anything, including 000.gif or something. It could be a cruel joke by some Apple web developer, I guess.

Could it be they're trying to measure the amount of searches people do on the Powerbook G5? To estimate the demand for it?

wow, that little .gif could mean a lot.

i remember when i bought my Sony MZ-R91 minidisc player. for days we searched around all the shops nearby only to end up with a display model.

selling display model stuff could just mean they're running out of stock and they're just awaiting another shipment? after all this Mac Mini machine must be cutting into production time at the ol' apple factory right?

EDIT: sorry but i just read on TS that if dosnt matter what you put in that link after the http://switch.atdmt.com/action/ bit, you still get that page...

false alarm

that's not exactly true. Try putting "apple_airportexpress_tech_overview" there. What you'll see is that it does indeed do something. There are lots of other items in the 'action' folder, too, as I sort of mentioned in an earlier post.

The URL would be:
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/apple_airportexpress_tech_overview

Hey all,

I got pretty excited about this when I read the first post. But it does not neccessarily tell us anything...

1x1 Gifs are used in emails, and webpages by those in digital marketing to provide the marketers with feedback. Basically, you cannot collect any information regarding an individuals visit unless they visit your site (i.e. time they visited, and how many times they visited)

they are most likely not collecting any information about you, but they could if they wanted to with that little GIF (i.e. IP Adress).

Apple usually has a finger on the pulse of the community and they know what rumors are circulating.

My guess is that they posted this little GIF to judge how much we are all anticipating the release of the new Powerbook, and tracking visitor information that way.

But another part of me would love to believe that this is what they are going to use to launch the new G5 Campaign... but the web developer in me says that they woulden't use a 1x1 gif to transform a page into a major campaign for a huge product launch (its just to easy for people to hack).

there's my $0.02

Very interesting...

well, it definately means they have started marketing efforts towards the G5 Powerbook.. which is a good sign.

I don't know if we'll see them for the next update... but soon... soon... muwahahahhahaa.
