Well the problem is, that there is no driver from logitech for it. I did managed to get it work though, but not with the Logitech drivers. You can install the latest Microsoft Intellipoint drivers and modify the Info.plist file to include the MX518.

The Info.plist is located here:
/System/Library/Extensions/MicrosoftMouse.kext/Contents/PlugIns/MicrosoftMouseUSB.kext/Contents

Add this:
Code:
                <key>Alphagrip Custom</key>
                <dict>
                        <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key>
                        <string>com.microsoft.driver.MicrosoftMouseUSB</string>
                        <key>HIDPointerAccelerationTable</key>

                   <integer>1</integer>
                </dict>

As the last entry in the list. Restart and you should see that the active mouse is the MX518 when you check in the Intellipoint properties. If not, please check the productId using System Profiler in utilities:

You should see something like this under Hardware/USB:
Code:
USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse:
  [B]Product ID:	0xc051[/B]
  Vendor ID:	0x046d  (Logitech Inc.)
  Version:	30.00
  Speed:	Up to 1.5 Mb/sec
  Manufacturer:	Logitech
  Location ID:	0xfa140000 / 6
  Current Available (mA):	500
  Current Required (mA):	98

The product is in HEX, convert it to an integer. And use that value in the Info.plist file.

If it works can simple change the keys with the system preferences to be COMMAND + [ or ].

Don't mean to jack your thread OP, but I have a similar question ...

I also have a Logitech mouse with the side buttons, and I was wondering if there is a way to reconfigure these buttons so that they activate Expose. For Windows, there is Logitech software that allows you to remap those buttons, but not sure if its possible with Mac.

You wouldn't happen to be using Lion, would you?

I'm using SteerMouse, it allows me to map all of my Logitech buttons. I have issues where it sometimes stops working (esp if I switch it off of battery power to plugged in to charge), but all you have to do is open the control panel and hit "reconnect"

You can configure the buttons to almost everything in Intellipoint. Including expose.
The only thing I miss is the top button on the MX518 (in front of the wheel).

I was disappointed in this when I plugged in my G5. The mouse was working, but I wanted to get the back button to work. Steermouse did that for me, but took away the on-the-fly DPI switching buttons and I can't figure out how to get that back. It's not that bad, though, because I configured the DPI buttons for Expose and Dashboard, but I'd like it if it worked like it was supposed to.

I'm sorry to bump such an old thread (hopefully that's not faux pas here) but it has such good info in it from gnuijen that I wanted to continue that discussion after I found it via Google.

Although I believe I followed everything he said, it didn't work for me. Intellimouse property pane doesn't show the mouse type at all anywhere; i'm wondering if I need to use an older version of the software; whatever he was were using for example. I tried the current 8.2 version of Intellipoint; who knows what he was using a year ago. I'm on 10.6.8.

Does anyone else have any solution to getting side buttons working in OSX via any method necessary besides buying some hacky 3rd party software? I'm more than happy to use Microsoft's software though, hacked to work with logitech.

I used USB Overdrive (?) something like that, free and can map all the mouse buttons you want.
