Taiwanese site Apple.pro has posted [Google translation] photos of what is claimed to be the dock connector and ribbon cable for the next-generation iPad.

While the part is a proprietary but relatively standard one that provides no specific insight into the device's specs, one interesting observation is that the actual connector portion is white rather than the black color seen on the iPad 2. The dock connector on the iPad 2 is embedded in the curved aluminum shell of the iPad 2 and not the black or white bezel, and is in fact black on all models.

Consequently, it is possible that this white dock connector portends a modified case design in which the dock connector itself would be preferred to be white, as is found on white iPhone 4 models. The dock connector on the original iPad was white, however, despite the fact that the device came only in black and the connector was similarly embedded in the aluminum shell.

There are of course no guarantees that the part depicted in the photos is indeed a genuine dock connector for the iPad 3 as claimed, but the part carries a very similar form factor to the existing part and a part number updated from 821-1180-A in the iPad 2 to a newer 821-1259-06. The tail end of the ribbon cable also makes a 90-degree turn in the new part, whereas the iPad 2's dock connector ribbon cable is entirely straight.

Apple has been rumored to be introducing some sort of updated iPad in the fall timeframe, with most sources suggesting that it should be considered a "pro" or "plus" version of the existing iPad 2 carrying a higher-resolution display rather than a full-fledged iPad 3. But it is unclear from these posted photos whether the part is indeed claimed to be from the rumored "iPad 2 Pro" or an iPad 3 that would presumably make its debut in 2012.

Apple.pro has in the past posted photos of genuine Apple parts, most notably last year in the case of a small touchscreen that made its way into the redesigned iPod nano a few months later.

I just still can not believe rumors of a new iPad design when it would be just over half a year since the last release, if a new one were to come out; while rumors are saying the iPhone 4s will just be a spec bump and they have had over a year and a few months to what just add A5, new camera, and fix the antenna issue? How many people did Apple pull from the iPhone design teams and move to the iPad?

Exactly. I see this as an iPhone 5 part before and iPad+ part or whatever.

This could mean that the iPad 3 could be split out into different categories. If they are going to use a different color for each connector depending on the color of the model, like the iPhone 4, then perhaps they will go with a solid color on front and back? Perhaps they would use polycarbonate, like the Macbook line or iPhone 3G/S? Then the pro model, with higher res screen and perhaps other features such as pressure sensitivity, more speed, or whatever, would be the only one to feature the aluminum casing?

I am still amazed by how many people refuse to believe in even the possibility of Apple shortening its update cycles. People, the iPad 2 is selling well. There's no dispute about that. But there is going to be tough competition this holiday season from Amazon, who are expected to bring a 9" Android tablet to market for the Christmas shopping season. Amazon is expected to sell this tablet at a loss in order to generate revenue on the services. Amazon is probably the only company right now with all the pieces in the right places to pose a big challenge to Apple.

So, what should Apple do to counter this growing threat? Update the product more frequently. How come nobody cried about the Motorola Xoom being discontinued practically as soon as it went on sale? Motorola, Samsung and LG update their smartphones every six months, so do you think they are going to sit still on tablets?

As a market leader you don't wait for your competition to catch up. You have to stay ahead of the pack.

-There are 18 different iPad models. Why in the world would apple add more.

-they are just now catching up to iPad 2 demand.

-the iPad 2 is currently undefeated with no competition in the near future

-concentration needs to be on the new iPod touch and iPhone 5

-an iPad with just a better screen is not worth it so early, especially with iPad 2 doing so well. The A5 is brand new. This new won't have an A6. It could be 1ghz, but that still isn't enough for an early upgrade to a device when the 512 is doing just fine. iOS is so simplified, we don't HAVE to have 1ghz

I guess Apple is just going to throw a new device out there JUST BECAUSE. Believe it when I see it

This is likely real iPad 3 evidence, so its real funny to see every response is an eye roll.

It might help if you knew what the hell you were talking about. The iPad 2 is already clocked at 1 GHz. Get your facts and terms straight. The iPad 2 comes with 512 MB of RAM, which really should be increased to 1 GB. Given this new information, I'm placing my bets on an entirely new iPad 3 and a price drop on the iPad 2, both will continue to sell simultaneously. This differentiates their product line-up and will pose a formidable obstacle for Amazon in the fall.

You all have heard about what Amazon is doing, right? That alone is enough for Apple to make a pre-emptive strike.

Totally and completely wrong.

An iPad with a 2048 x 1536 display & possibly FaceTime HD, would essentially destroy what competition there is. It would also drive iPad sales through the roof for the the holiday quarter. Are you even aware the number of the people uninterested in iPad 2 due to the lack of improved display? Its almost guaranteed that Apple makes huge improvements to the iPad display in the next edition, and there are a LOT of people holding out for that model.

Yes iPad 2 is selling faster than Apple is making them, but that is nothing. Apple is adding an entirely new company to the factory list to fix that problem, and be able to offer more products, sooner.

You are correct. And Apple has had this planned long before knowing about Amazon's next tablet.

The unblock able Samsung crap and the Xoom are enough to make Apple add a new model mid-year.

More than enough.

It's probably Samsung's Totally-Not-A-Dock-Connector(TM) for the new iTab 3. You'd be forgiven for the mistake.

Agreed, mostly.

As for what I don't agree with is about Amazon in that they seem to be looking to compete with B&N Nook Color rather than the iPad. Perhaps I read that wrong.

In any event, both IDC and Gartner predict iPad market share which is near 65% to continue to decline with Andriod, QNX and WebOS tablets gaining market share. So for the iPad to remain the dominated tablet, Apple will have to move quickly to stem the tide of competition. So it is conceivable that Apple will be coming out with an iPad 2+/iPad 3 in short order.

Though I wonder if the A5 will be able to handle the quadrupled resolution of an iPad with "retina" display. Specifically with games.
