OK, if so, let's consider the reasons.

Less weight on the mantle at the Poles, due to the ice melt?

Higher water near shorelines, causing the water table to go lower than previously, "lubricating" fracture joints?

Anyone else have any outlandish theories? 😉

Plates shift. It happens. Its unfortunate but it happens. The earth will always see periods of increased and decreased activity.

Peru is definitely no stranger to earthquakes.
 
Chile still the overall winner for earthquake activity. They make other places like California seem tame by comparison.
