Apple Continuing to Deal with iCloud Startup Issues

Apple's massive software launch yesterday to debut iOS 5 and iCloud resulted in a number of issues for some users, with iOS installation errors being a primary source of frustration as Apple's servers were overwhelmed by demand for the new operating system.

In fact, as Cult of Mac and The Next Web summarize, traffic to Apple was so high that broader Internet infrastructure was even experiencing difficulties under the load. In particular, one Internet exchange point in London saw its traffic jump by 50% as iOS 5 became available.
The traffic at the LONAP (LONAP is a London Neutral Internet Exchange Point where Internet and content providers exchange traffic) increased from a normal peak of around 18Gb/s to around 28Gb/s.

LONAP's Andy Davidson tells MacRumors that the iOS 5 traffic was unprecedented for a software upgrade.
The traffic was around twice what we would see on a typical Wednesday evening. There was as much traffic as we would see for a major sporting event (such as England playing in the World or European cups). Such volumes have never been seen before for a software upgrade.

The iCloud portion of yesterday's launch has also seen some hiccups, with a number of users reporting difficulties getting the service up and running and/or converting from MobileMe to iCloud. Apple issued a status update yesterday evening indicating that it was limiting the rate of conversions in the face of high demand, encouraging customers experiencing difficulties to try again at a later time.

And while many of the high traffic issues have settled down by today, users are now reporting that iCloud mail is down for the moment, although Apple has yet to issue a status update addressing the situation.

Brief downtime and minor issues are not particularly surprising given the popularity of Apple's services and the crush of demand at rollout, but customers who remember the difficult rollout of MobileMe several years ago are undoubtedly hoping that Apple can iron out the wrinkles more quickly this time around.

Update: Apple has issued a status update acknowledging the problems with iCloud mail.
Some users are experiencing intermittent authentication errors when trying to use mail. Normal service will be restored ASAP. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Lost all my MobileMe contacts while migrating to iCloud...

Edit: I did thankfully back them up but just haven't had the time to import them.

I can't log in to iCloud mail on any device - Mac, iPhone, or even the website. My computer and iPhone keep saying my password is incorrect. It all worked last night and earlier this morning.

C'mon Apple. You'd think they'd anticipate the massive load this would all cause. You'd think that massive NC data center would be able to help.

What would Steve have done?

He was disappointed after the bad MobileMe launch... And now with all the iOS5 bugs and iCloud-errors...

Ever since upgrading our iPhone 4 to iOS 5, we've had tremendous LAGS and DELAYS when typing text, such as typing the text in this comment field right now. These delays are ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE in Mail, where it sometimes takes 10 SECONDS for Mail to process what we're typing. This is tremendously annoying, and makes our iPhone 4 completely unusable!! Why did you do this to us, Apple?

Everything is fine, except for e-mail. It isn't working on any of my devices. My password keeps getting rejected

Appears to be a system-wide issue.

I was surprised last night at how smoothly things went and how easily everything transferred. I was actually expecting a few hiccups.

Well here they are. Seems to be a socket issue on their end, at least with respect to the e-mail issue.

As long as the problem doesn't drag out, it's part of the game. It's a system migration, after all.

Mine gave the same error on my phone. I had to agree to new TOS and it works fine now. I was on the Beta before yesterday.

Yup, having same problem. After having been through the MobileMe debacle, my hope is it gets resolved in a couple hours. I've learned to tame my expectations when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Since this is the 2nd time transitions for .Mac/MobileMe/iCloud products haven't gone that great, I think it would behoove them to switch to staged rollouts over 3 days the next time they want to change their cloud technologies. That, or have the server switch-over first, and iOS updates afterwards.

Doing it all on the same day has turned into a clusterf$(# for the 2nd or 3rd time now!

I think Jobs sent an internal email saying it was a mistake to release iOS 2.0, MobileMe, and the iPhone 3G on the same day. While I guess Apple has learned since then it's still causing issues.

I had an issue where my data could not be migrated from MobileMe to iCloud UNTIL iCloud was set up on my iPhone. This makes things harder for people who have subscriptions but are on older phones like the original or 3G, and want to upgrade to the new model; they would have to wait until Friday or even later.

After numerous rejections, I was able to migrate from MobileMe to iCloud this morning. Once started, the migration went smoothly. Only glitch is that I am unable to see my email on the web version. All other tools work fine.

My iCloud transition went very well yesterday, but today I can't check my email (neither on Mac nor iCloud.com). Says password is rejected. Everything else works fine though.

Having the exact same issue on Web, Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Very frustrating. Apple just can't seem to be able to launch an online service without major volume / tech issues. Oh well. Hopefully mail comes back soon.

I do hope at some point we'll no longer have "What would Steve have done..." responses. Let him rest in peace.

My former-MobileMe account is having the reported email issues. Everything else works file. My son's "new" iCloud account is working fine...no email issues at all.

Maybe there's a problem with "legacy" accounts?
I do trust Apple will fix this today...instead of RIM's three day debacle.

Had the exact same issues. I've also had issues in it recognizing me touching the home button. The reason is that the software is always designed for system requirements that are not released yet.

As in, the iPhone 6 could run iOS 5 perfectly, but may have problems with iOS 6. Best solution is probably just to free up space.

A better way

Why doesn't Apple just use a lottery system based alphabetically by MobileMe address or idevice serial number? When you go to do your upgrade you are advised that you can go forward or you have to wait until a pre-set time. That way the system will be less taxed and people will know going in when to return.

Is anyone having trouble backing up their iDevice to the cloud? Also, when I want to WiFi sync it says its my PC must be turned on (which it is).
