just upgraded my late 2009 mbp with a ssd and 8 GB ram, it feels like a new up-to-date machine but i'm always up for a new design :D

The faster processors are kinda pointless when the standard MacBook pro ships with a 5400rpm hard drive. I hope the next revision includes ssd drives in the base model.
Personally, I'd rather Apple ship MBP with slow HDD so I can buy myself an OWC Extreme pro 6G with a real price and not Apple selling them with their 30% markup.

If this becomes an additional option for those who want it, great!

Personally I really hope they don't get rid of the regular mbp for this. I could live with getting rid of the optical drive if I gain something else - be it a second hd, a better gpu, more memory, you know what I mean. Thin doesn't count, the mbps are already thin enough for me. If this becomes the only 15" option I might have to look for alternatives. :(

The way I see it, there's NO WAY a next gen "MacBook Air 15" would have a GPU.
Heat constraints much? Also, lack of ports that I frequently use (major one being FW800)?

You could stick in a lower-end GPU and under clock it. Pretty much anything is better than the stock Intel GPU included in Sandy Bridge, even the 320M outdoes it.

So will the 15" MPA have a resolution bump over the 15" MBP like the 13 air has over the 13 pro?

I think we are nearing the return of the "MacBook" as the sole mobile computer line of Apple; pros and airs no more. Credit card ready indeed!

I had a similar thought... I was thinking the Air would become the "Macbook" and the Macbook Pro would be redesigned but retain the MBP name. Regardless, something is brewing and I am excited!

So what you want is a downgrade in performance from current GPUs present in MBP 15"?
Lol, no way.

FW800 is too big to fit on a MBA. One of the major downfalls of this "wedge" design.
You would also lose the dedicated in/out (very useful at times), Kensington lock (very useful), and the battery indicator.
This one won't bother people much but you would also lose the Ethernet port.

Apple probably won't make these sacrifices to play the RAZR game.

Gotta agree with what someone else said, I really think it's just gonna be marketed as the "New MacBook", to be referred to as simply the MacBook.

I have my credit card ready for a 13" MacBook Pro that has no DVD drive and is as thin as a MacBook Air but with the power of a standard mobile Ivy Bridge processor.

The un-upgradable RAM is a key-issue with the air models. I really hope they won't ditch the 13" Pro model as it provides at least easier RAM and HDD upgrades if you wish to.

Slim is nice and I get that but upgradability is better(as long as the slimness doesn't take too much of a hit - and to be honest, the current Pro's are really slim and lightweight compared to some of the laptop PC's out there..).

Yes please.
Cant' remember the last time I used my Super Drive.
Don't know what a 15" MBP would offer over a 15" MBA as long as it uses "pro" level processor.

I would be more game if apple made it liquid metal.

you can just plug in to your home ThunderBolt docking station (or Cinema Display) for all these legacy ports... :)

1900 x 1200 and you've got a new customer...

1920x1080 and you're getting consistent.

What will IB let them do as regards GPU with such a machine? Would the extra 2" allow a discrete one? The 13" Air is so incredibly cool running I hope they can pull that off AND give blazing graphics performance!

I would hardly call FW800 a legacy port. That's like calling LaCie's latest as legacy devices. Plus, who the hell wants to pay $1000 just so they can plug in their FW800 drive?

The MBA uses a ULV processor not because it "needs" to be weaker than the 13", but because it's just too small for a normal voltage CPU. A Quad-core normal voltage (as you refer to it, a "pro" level) processor is definitely out of the question if Apple goes the MBA route.

Although this might seem like a good idea for some, IMHO I just hope it doesn't replace the MacBook Pro. I would not like the hit on the gpu and the lack of ports. Not to mention the super expensive SSD's apple sells and the lack of being able to upgrade your memory on the current Airs would really disappoint if it replaced the Pro.

Would be a cool option if it was a few hundred bucks cheaper though.

Lets hope that Apple does not kill of the Macbook Pro line.

Creative professionals needs good graphics cards. Even with Ive Bridge, the Intel internal graphics is not much better then the iPhones.

In fact. Last gen Intel graphics is the same PowerVR chips that are in the iPhones. And some people wonders why Intel graphic is so slow.

Now you're talkin'!! That would be sweet. Or I'd even like black brushed aluminum.

Would die for a 15" Apple notebook with a 1920 x 1200 resolution.

The 16:10 screen format is unfortunate dead.

To use that size panels, Apple have to pay a good premium over 16:9 screens. Something that most customers does not appreciate.
