Netflix today released an updated app for Android tablets, namely the just launched Kindle Fire and the new Barnes and Noble Nook, and says the update will be coming to the iPad in the next few weeks.
The new design is much more immersive and provides greater focus on the growing number of titles in the Netflix catalog. In fact, the new interface displays twice as many movies and TV shows as before, enabling you to discover even more titles you'll love. Also, we've taken greater advantage of the tablet's unique features, inviting you to swipe through rows of titles featuring larger artwork.
Netflix for iOS is a free universal app, though it does require a $7.99/month streaming subscription.

Good news. The current app, which is just the Netflix website, is pretty lame.

The current app is even less than the Netflix website. I'd settle for it being at least as useful as the website!

Really looking forward to this. Netflix on iOS is a pain for browsing movies, I find. I much prefer the style of the recently updated website and Android app.

please give me disc queue management!

I wish the netflix app would let you manage your disc queue. I know they hate discs and all, but come on! Every other queue management app I've tried is terrible and the netflix website is also terrible on the iphone/ipad.

PLEASE.

I hate how the current website just dumps you into the movie or show without any option for details or trailer or anything first. So you have to hover, wait, mouse over the pop-up, click the name, yadda yadda yadda.

Playback is fine but the rest of the app is horrible. I'd love to see improvements but NF seems totally clueless what users actually want.

1) Display of which content expires soon
2) Ability to add to disc queue from the mobile version
3) "Not interested" option
4) NOT recommending content that I either marked as not interested, or is already in my queue.
5) Showing the name of the content (including TV episode number/title) in the top navigation controls

You know, I've been a good Netflix subscriber for years, and stuck with them through the hard times, went to streaming only when they pushed that. Now I am disappointed in them; very disappointed for pushing out an app to a tiny minority of failed tablets and putting off the market leader and their tablet usage leader by far. Seems like yet another bad business decision.

What is this "disc" thing you speak of? I think I remember my grandpa speaking of some sort of physical media people used back in the day.

Until January of 2011, the iPad version of the Netflix app did let you manage your DVD queue. They updated it to be streaming only just like the iPhone version.

The Kindle Fire just came out yesterday. I wouldn't brand it as a failed tablet as it's selling very well and taking market share away from Apple's iPad.

Actually we don't know either of those things yet. And we may never know sales numbers for it, Amazon generally doesn't release them, just vague statements that they're selling a lot.

It's the thing Netflix uses to distribute the movies that don't suck.

You mean the Qwikster queue? :D

The app looks pretty nice. Hopefully they'll roll out this kind of interface at some point for Win/Mac too. I really like Hulu's app, and I would like something more immersive like that for PC use.

Maybe it is Android first because they want to test the app out first? That or Google paid them some dough.

Or I suppose it could be going through the Apple approval process.

Netflix's app *sucked*. It was just a UIWebView wrapped around a crashy, poorly coded webpage designed to look like a native app. Can't get any worse than that!

Hopefully this update will be *drastic*. Because drastic is what it needs to be for it to be any good.

How About More Movies Released After 2009

In my opinion they need to concentrate more on getting us a lot more movies that were released in the last 2 yrs instead of wasting time producing apps that suck worse than their tv / movie selection..~~~

They have made some nice improvements on the web site that I hope land on the app. Though they jacked the web site up in a lot of ways too.

I like the new grouping for TV shows. I hope that ports. The iPhone app still breaks the seasons apart. Really annoying!

I hate how the current website just dumps you into the movie or show without any option for details or trailer or anything first. So you have to hover, wait, mouse over the pop-up, click the name, yadda yadda yadda.

That is SOOOOO annoying! If I had a dollar for every time their site stuttered doing that and then stated to launch the movie, I'd have a free year. I liked the old version of the site better. This hover over thing stinks, and half the time it doesn't work or shows black tiles.

Playback is fine but the rest of the app is horrible. I'd love to see improvements but NF seems totally clueless what users actually want.

Amen.
1. Your Queue shows you (sorry if you realize this already) if you click on it, and view it as a list. It's a pain though. Would be nice if they would put a tag below the movie icon that says "expiring soon" or "expires in 3 days." The Queue will save the items that expire though, and a month before they return it will show you. It also puts them back in your list, but sometimes you don't realize if you have a large queue.
2. I don't know why they took that out!
3. See #4, if they ignore that you're not interested, it alost doesn't matter.
4. Especially when it's already in your queue or it's something you've watched and rated before.

LOL. Yeah, but since people actually use IOS tablets, they need to make sure it's perfect. There's no one but crickets to bitch if the Android version sucks on a tablet.
