So my girlfriend has the white launch day 4. She woke up this morning, and her microphone is acting strange. People can hear us, but we can't hear any callers.

phone was restored, restarted. And we cannot hear anything. Dead silence.

No water damage, phone has full service, 3G, wifi.

Any help? Apple store is too far away from where we are right now.

Tried it on speakerphone?

Any audio from iTunes, etc?

Try cleaning out the headset jack with a wooden toothpick, if there is some "gunk" in there it might think headphones are plugged in.

Come to think of it, try plugging in some headphones :)

Gunk in the dock connector can do goofy things too, phone thinks it's in an audio dock - clean that out also.

Okay, cleaned everything. It works on speakerphone.

It doesn't say anything is plugged in. But I still can't hear anyone talk.

Or when you call someone, it doesn't make the ringing noise.

Sounds like maybe the earpiece speaker is broken. I had that happen on an old 3GS I had. I took it into an Apple store and the Genius who I dealt with fixed it in just a couple of minutes at no charge.

Thats so strange, it was working last night at midnight haha.

So they can fix it without replacing the phone?

Agreed. You say you're not close to an Apple store; but if it's a launch-day white it's still in warranty so you definitely want Apple to deal with it. Taking it to the store will be a while-you-wait, they'll either replace the speaker or swap the phone. If you send it in, you're looking at a couple of days at least without a phone.

Ok.. have you tried the headphone? does it work?

If its only a ear piece problem.. very easy to fix... you should have a iPhone repair shop nearby.. and they can fix it in 5 mins... super easy repair

just check on craigslist in your area... there should be tons of them

it should not cost you more than $20.. the parts is only $2 and takes 5mins

Headphones work, speakers work. Just no noise at all when calling someone.

Just gonna take the drive to Apple tomorrow afternoon.

I hate to ask the obvious, but the mute switch is not on is it? That would produce some of the behavior that you are describing, except for the part where you cannot hear anyone speaking. I guess there may be more than one thing going on there, because the ringing of the phone comes from the speaker on the bottom, and your hearing a caller comes from the speaker up top.
