I am an iPhone to Samsung switcher, i had a 1st gen iPhone, and a 3Gs (upgrade cycles being what they are), but was so dissatisfied with the iPhone as an actual phone, mainly due to the battery not getting through an entire work day, and certainly not getting me the 16+hrs i need between undocking in the morning and connecting up again as i go to bed that i need my "portable" device that is a tether to the world to have as a minimum without the need for extra battery packs or bulky chargers i have to carry with it.
For me the Samsung Galaxy SII lets me do everything i did on the iPhone, browse the net, read email, Facebook, twitter, watch video, listen to music on the go (even sync with iTunes with a bit of tweaking), text and , most importantly, take and make calls throughout the day without fear of battery life suddenly ending on me at 4pm.
right now, after undocking at 630am this morning, (its now 10:37 at night) my SII still has over 30% charge remaining, the 3Gs, and friends who have iPhone 4 and 4s all say they have to either minimise use, turn off wifi/bluetooth/3G and still end up having to top up charge mid afternoon 4pm-6pm ish.
However, i did not "abandon" the apple ecosystem, i have an iPad, on which my old apps all run, and as i primarily used them for lesure rather than work, do that on the bigger screen is a blessing.
The correct assessment of the samsung and apple issue here i believe is that :
Apples iPad will cannibalise sales of the iPhone going forward, as people realise they can have the best of both worlds, the fantastic app ecosystem of apple on a large device, and a usable smart phone that lasts a full day on a single charge with another phone (be it android, Blackberry or Windows 7).
Or, alternatively, people who are happy with the iPhone and spend a lot of time in offices where they can charge from the PC they are at and don't experience the battery issue, can buy cheaper android tablets or more functional android/windows convergence devices like netbooks
obviously apple wants to stop this, so it wants its competition to not release anything that competes in either market.
Just my 2c after chatting with people who have abandoned the iPhone since the 3Gs and 4 release, and they all say the same thing as me, we don't need lightest and thinnest with a 6hr battery life, increase the thickness a little, add a little weight and give us a battery that lasts a day, could doubling the iPhones battery REALLY make it impossible to lift and so thick you can't fit it in your pocket ?!?!?!
