iPod touch and Apple ID for Kids

Being new to this part of the forum I have a question about iPod Touch and kids. This will be the young child's first apple device. Should I establish a unique apple ID for my son? Or, is it advantageous to piggy back on my apple ID for apps etc.

I have already been brainstorming as to establishing guidelines for the use of this device.
