I love how alot of you are making assumptions about the Japanese without actually knowing. They view this as a sort of lottery, most of the time you lose, sometimes you win.
There are people on the Japanese forums not happy with not having chosen the good bags. The 'worst' bag was an iPod nano, a watch band, the nike + insert, a t-shirt and some gift cards.
Go ahead and hop on 2CH and see.
Lucky bags are a country wide thing in Japan.

Probably because everyone would feel entitled to the MBA and when they don't get one complain/get angry/start fights in the stores. Plus it would just create an influx of new-in-box items on craigslist/ebay which would lose Apple a bit of money.

For those asking why Americans don't have that, its simple. Americans don't like losing, especially in todays "everyones a winner" society.

At the local mall in my town, we have this thing every year and the mall buys thousands of bananas and you buy a ticket, and get a banana and theres a sticker on each banana you peel off the sticker and theres a percentage discount and the name of a store. Its fun because theres a lot of bartering between customers for different bananas. All the guys want the gamestop bananas and the females want the ones for Torrid or Kays Jewelers.

Its fun and its like a midnight event as well, so all the stores are open till 3am.

For those who say American's can't handle it, I disagree. Have you guys seen the Bags of Crap at Woot? Thousands upon thousands of people anxiously await the sale of those, and very few complain about what they get. 99.9% of the people are just excited for the experience. Now granted $8 is a lot less of an investment than $400, but I think as long as most people got around $400 in merchandise, even if it wasn't what they wanted, they would be happy.

In Hungary, apple stores has garage sales every year, when you can buy the past generation stuffs with up to 90% off. For example last time i bought Ozaki, UltraCase, etc iPad cases for 3 dollars, I bought an iPad 64GB Wifi+ 3G for 400 USD, and iPod Shuffle 4GB for 18 USD... that was very good... But i had to be there at 5AM, for beeing the 5th in the line.
