Apple Ramping Up Operations in Israel with Anobit Acquisition and New Research Center

According to a new report from Israeli business newspaper Calcalist (via 9to5Mac), Apple has begun hiring for its research and development center in Haifa, Israel with a goal of opening the center by the end of February. The report claims that Apple has already received "several hundred resumes" from engineers looking to work in the new center, which is being headed up by Apple's newly-hired Israeli high-tech executive Aharon Aharon.

The report notes that is likely to set up its research center near existing facilities run by Intel, Microsoft, and Phillips, with Apple seeking expertise in chip development, specifically with electrical circuits and hardware testing and verification.




Apple's new research center effort is a separate initiative from its recent acquisition of Israeli flash memory firm Anobit. Apple CEO Tim Cook noted on yesterday's earnings conference call that Anobit is currently being integrated into Apple's structure and that it will operate under hardware engineering chief Bob Mansfield. 9to5Mac reports that Apple has sent vice president Johny Srouji to oversee Anobit's operations in Israel. A native of Israel, Srouji worked for IBM and Intel (including several stints at those companies' operations in Israel) before joining Apple in 2008. Srouji is overseeing aspects of Apple's VLSI operations, which focus on chip design and implementation.

Not sure I follow why it needed cleaning up till for post. There was only one other comment in this thread, and it stated that it was going to be a big year for Apple.

So he's anticipating a problem before it occurs. Perhaps best to wait until the problem occurs, THEN clean up the site.

Of course, Apple got into the business of design and manufacturing of their own Apple processors (e.g., A4, A5). The design part was not new as Apple assisted in designing the PowerPC chip with IBM and Motorola.

Now Apple is advancing into Flash, which is the technology for memory. However, many may forget that Flash is what Solid State Drives are derived from.

What does every computer need? Processor, memory, disk space, and screen. Apple's covering their most expensive parts. If Apple addresses the final basic material -- screens -- then they can take it to the living room!

So by buying a company that has expertise in a technology, that's the same as Apple designing the technology? You might want to google who designed and made the A4/A5 processor...

Apple marketing is definitely the best in the business.

So true, it happens every time this story has come up too. The thread turns into a infomercial/propaganda machine.

Anyway, I'll be happy if/when the expertise offered by this new acquisition actually filters through to Apple products. Hopefully that'll happen sooner rather than later and Apple will forge further ahead.

I believe I am savvy enough but still don't get the point of your post. The article is about Apple, an American corporation, investing r&d dollars in Israel. Haifa has developed quite the reputation for advanced chip design - small country - huge capability. I see nothing wrong in commenting on the foreign investment or the country, especially given the title of the article.
