Apple to Give Employees $500 Off Macs and $250 Off iPads

According to 9to5Mac, during today's town hall meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced to employees that they would get $500 off Macs and $250 iPads.

The new discount program starts in June 2012, and can only be used once every 3 years. Employees also need to have been working at Apple for at least 90 days. The discount is reportedly for both corporate and retail employees. The discount is said to exclude the Mac mini.

Apple employees presently are allowed a one-a-year 25% discount on Apple systems. One report even claims that this discount will remain in place alongside the new discounts.

In 2007, shortly after the original iPhone's launch, Apple had announced a similar perk for employees. At that time, Steve Jobs announced that all full time and part time Apple employees would receive an 8GB iPhone.

Heck. I've been trying to get a job as a specialist at Apple stores in my area... this is a nice bit of extra motivation!

Once every 3 years? That seems a step backwards.

I hope they can still provide F&F discounts. I've received discounts on high end BTO that's more than $500.

On the retail side, working for Apple sucks. You get crapped on a lot by customers and the innovation isn't there like it is at corporate. It's really no different than any other retail gig.

Side note, this discount is an *additional* $500 off every three years. They still get the 25% off once a year.

What an odd exclusion.

I know you can't really discount $500 from a product that cost $599, but why not at least a $200 discount (if the iPad qualifies for a $250 discount and that cost $499 retail).

Its not that big-of-a-deal, I just thought that it was odd.

Likely this has to do with Apple's cost of the item, $99 mac mini does not recover any of the costs associated with the item, where a $699 macbook pro will recover some of the costs. I would also suspect Apple would rather have laptops out in the open than Mac Mini's at home. The $99 Mini is also a huge temptation for buy resell. At lease with the macbook you have a lot more of your own personal money into the product that makes you think about the purchase etc.

So the staff still gets the 25% discount yearly right?

IIRC it was 27% not 25%.

I find it good if they replaced the yearly Employee Personal Discount with that $500 / $250 discount. All the more since they didn't give discounts on iPads previously.

But I hope they kept the "family and friends" 17% discount which was nice to have and a very nice way to spread the Apple love around you (I sold 3 Macs to friends within a 9 month internship with that dscount - and Apple was probably making more money on those Macs than on macs sold through retail since there was no reseller overhead/margin).

I wonder why the new benefit will not kick in until June 2012. It is natural to delay this discount for iPad3, as Apple is going to be supply restrained for a while early on, but why wait so long for Macs?

yes its 27%.

I dont think its good to loose the yearly 27% discount and replace it with a once in 3 year 500$ discount. :mad: As it is on my pay I can hardly afford a Mac.

oh and we do already get a discount on iPads. 2%.

I think this discount will be in place so that Apple employees use Apple products. If an employee plans to buy a Mac with rebate, sell it, and pocket the profit, then "once every 3 years" is in their way, but that isn't what this is for.

It also makes sure employees are not getting pestered by the usual "friends" and relatives who only know you when they can get something from you.

Come on, it is a nice gift, but at best just a $250 benefit annually (500+250 every 3 years). I don't know about retail employees, but corporate salaries should dwarf this by far.

Just imagine Apple doing that with everybody. Because they have so huge commercial margins and a huge pile of cash in the bank. They would take the market by storm and increase worldwide market share of the Mac from 5 to 90% in just three years!

Seems kind of stingy. At my workplace we get a heck of a lot more than $500 off, up to four times per year, and we can give a similar discount to friends and family members up to four times per year. No one wants to make a big deal about working for an automotive manufacturer, I guess.

Time for me to send in an application to work for Apple. Hell, I'll take a janitorial job to get $500 off a new Mac. Let's see, I'll have to work 2,000 hours as a janitor in order for me to have the money to afford the Mac I want and be able to get that discount. Oh well.... :(

Would it be a good idea to state that I am an AAPL shareholder on my application?

I agree. It's not that impressive a discount. I haven't worked in retail in 20 years (thankfully) but when I worked for The Gap in its prime we got 30% off everything including gift certificates and 50% off several items each month.

Of course, Gap had the advantage of most of their items being made overseas by people making slave wages.

Oh wait...

I'm sure Apple knows best about what prices they need to set to maintain a profit ratio they are happy with.

I'm sure they could make them free and they would get 10 orders from every person on the planet, but what point is a 100% market share if you aren't earning any profits from it.
