The report notes that mentions for both processors entered the iOS beta code simultaneously, but it is unclear exactly what Apple's plans are for the two processors. It is possible that they represented a "Plan A/Plan B" scenario, or they could potentially be targeted for two different devices.
Two different device groups. Users need performance, but need also longer battery life.

"new ipad 2" ?
It stays the ipad 2 is my guess. why would they improve an old product. this has also never happened before?

----------

id totally hope for a ipad mini, just to have a chance that that mini will have the a5x and then i can have a full 10inch with the A6 ;D

Yes. Bumped specs in MBP. While introducing a new MBP.

Why are people still going on about a 7-inch iPad? It's not a MacBook! Screen size is essential with the iPad: If they release a 7-inch iPad it's akin to releasing a new kind of product: There will be 0 apps that work for it, just scaled-up iPhone apps. Apple constantly raves about the size of the iPad being "big enough to make meaningful content" etc, etc.

A5X CPU... OK
iOS 5.1... OK

...but what about iOS 6? I really wish Apple would release iOS 6 and bring some OS X features in iOS now... such:

a File Manager (Finder), Multi-Users, Profiles/Groups, AirDrop, UI Themes, iPhoto/Aperture, Delete Photo in PhotoStream, True SMS/Mail Custom Sounds, Weather/Stock/Calendar as widget in Lock Screen, Voice Only Facetime Calls, Facetime over 3G, Turn the iDevice as USB Drive, RSS Reader in Newsstand, TV Streaming from iTunes "Live", Quick Access to Brightness/Bluetooth/etc.., Better Spotlight to list all files/apps/etc...

Spid

PS: If the Apple TV should have a CPU, it should be the A6 for the 1080p. So the A5X "could" be for the iPad2 or smaller 7.85" iPad for 720p.

A 7.85 in iPad mini would have a 4:3 aspect ratio and run 1024x768 which means all current apps that run on iPads would run unmodified.

File manager - No
Multi Users - No
AirDrop - Likely
UI Themes - No
Delete in Photostream - Coming in iOS 5.1

I don't think there will be both chips in the end. They will choose only the best for their devices overall, using both would be ineffective for both fragmentation and mass economy strategy.

It wouldn't be any problem at all from a "fragmentation" perspective. Apple's currently sold offerings already span multiple CPUS. It would be worse if there were an opportunity to make one device better, yet they held it back because they didn't want to have an additional SoC out there at the same time.

Does anyone else feel like this is a controled leak market research opportunity for Apple? :p

"What WOULD they say about an $80 price hike? Let's just leak that we are doing it and see what they say. "

Facetime over 3G is not possible. Even in 5.1 beta

A5X for 2012 ipad, 2012 iphone, 2012 Apple TV.
A6 (quad on a15) for 2013 ipad, 2013 iphone.
Oh, btw - there will NEVER be 128gb ipad. As well as 7" ipad. These devices exist only in better world with 250-320gb ipod classic

Pixel resolution is not the issue. Having a finger driven interface means that elements must have a certain minimum size (as in millimeters or fractions of an inch) to be able to interact with reliably.

Don't forget the rumor about the possible October (or around there) launch of ANOTHER iPad which would be quite advanced and have "killer apps" of some sort. Sure, just a rumor, but if there is a newer, better processor stepping in behind, already developed and allowed for in the latest iOS, the rumor of a second iPad within a year might become true.

The A6 was a major crown jewel of design, the way it was talked up since summer last year. Perhaps the design and production became troublesome and they needed to push its release off a little.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

One question of logic: will iOS 5 be around at that time? There will probably be an upgrade at or around the next-next iPad's release.

iOS 2-- 7/11/2008
iOS 3-- 6/17/2009
iOS 4-- 6/21/2010
iOS 5-- 10/12/2011 (previewed 6/6/2011)

So about every year is a major upgrade, and the 5 has the A6 in already.
Maybe iOS 5 is complete enough that it becomes the OS for years.

Dreamers ... you get a A5X in iPad ... A6 ... comes in iPad 4.
iPhone 5 will have an A6.
iPad with Retina Display is enough reason to buy iPad (you will see).

It's Tim Cook leading and he will get the maximum money out of you!

I mentioned 7.8, based on previous rumours. That is basically 8", not 7. A 20% reduction in size would still make it very useable with the current iPad GUI.

I like my iPad at 9.7", but I know others who would prefer it a bit smaller.

Its going to be a A6 relax. No dual core nothing QuadCore is coming to all.

Now on the iPhone 5 that could be different and we could see a pumped up A5

A 128GB iPad is as guaranteed as Death and Taxes. Hello Anobit.

Pixel resolution is not the issue. Having a finger driven interface means that elements must have a certain minimum size (as in millimeters or fractions of an inch) to be able to interact with reliably.

Developers can modify the areas of touch quite easily in their apps. The harder part would have been supporting yet another resolution.

Stop the wishful thinking people, the most logical is:

IPad2 stock leftovers sold as refurbished
iPad 3 or 2S with A5X ready for production, the A6 probably is still in prototype status.

iphone 5 and ipad 3 perhaps?
or apple tv 3?

possible. Could also be that at some point they prototyped both an A5x and A6 processor for the iPad. Doesn't mean they approved both for release at all or even just at this time. Perhaps the A5x is for the iPad 3 and the A6 is being tested for the iPad 4.

Who knows.
