Apple's App Store today reached 25 billion downloads since its inception in 2008, and along with the milestone comes the end of the company's "25 Billion App Countdown" promotion launched just over two weeks ago. The winner of the promotion, who is yet to be announced, will be awarded a $10,000 gift card valid for App Store, Mac App Store, or any other iTunes Store content.

The App Store took a little under two and half years to reach 10 billion downloads, and less than six additional months to reach 15 billion downloads.

With today's milestone, the App Store has seen its last 10 billion downloads come over a period of just eight months, putting Apple's pace at 15 billion downloads per year and undoubtedly continuing to accelerate. As tracked by our sister site AppShopper, Apple has approved a total of nearly three quarters of a million apps for the App Store, with over 550,000 of them currently available in the store.

I wonder who it will be? Hopefully someone from this site.

Strange, I was just on the Apple site 15 or so minutes ago and they still had that timer...? Guess I should have downloaded an app :p

I wonder who won this year?

I had several entry forms open and submitted as many as I could, but I'm sure everyone else did too.

I tried to time it as well and downloaded a few apps over the waning minute or so. The rules say that the counter wasn't accurate though so who knows, I imagine it had to be see close.

Same, but my iPad and iPhone were showing different numbers, like a 200,000 difference, just seconds before the 25,000,000,000th app was downloaded (even while refreshing both browsers), so I didn't get them in in time...:p

I forgot about the stupid password thing and probably missed it by a long shot

Hmmm, why is the A Billion Thanks image different on the US apple site, to the one on all the other sites?

I hope app updates count, the counter was still 2.5million away so I decided to update a few apps until it got a little closer (yes I know it's not exact, I was just using it as an estimate) so I didn't download any new apps yet.

Wow! $10,000 whole dollars!

...how generous from a company that's sitting on 100 billion in cash.

They could have just let the milestone pass and kept the $10k. You seem like the type of guy who would get a new car for your 18th birthday then complain about the colour.
