Doesn't Verizon let you tether to the new iPad for free? If that's correct, I have no reason to jailbreak my iPad.

i would consider jailbreaking mine. what are the top benefits of jailbreaking an ipad?

Just picked mine up. I am super excited to see the jailbreak. Hopefully it won't take as long as it did for the 4S to actually roll out to users. I would be more than okay with a Tethered. As stated above, iBooks is a must, though.

Sometimes I don't understand why Apple even tries, when we have these brilliant minds on the JailBreak teams. Apple can't hire them all.

Great news this early on. I'm sure everyone was getting sick of waiting 6+ months after new devices were released for any hope of a jailbreak. Seems we need more people on the task. If only there was a single team we could all help fund to work it non-stop.

If you don't remember, MuscleNerd had a JB for the 4S on day one, or two... But, we did not see an openly available way of legally releasing it for some time.

There is something with a dev account that was special, and regular accounts couldn't legally use the JB.

Digital security is definitely hard. The bigger problem, though, is the security model these sorts of devices use.

It's very common to use a public + private key pair to protect data. Thing is, most DRM-related solutions use them in a way that's completely opposite of how the system is supposed to work. You are the one who's supposed to hold the private key... and on these devices you still do - BUT they do their utmost to keep that key away from you. However you need to be able to access that key to use it! That's the fundamental problem here. They can't lock the key away completely, so there's always a way for someone to find it and use it in a "non-approved" manner.

If it can be constructed, it can also therefore be deconstructed and rebuilt as one sees fit.

That's true, although at least you know there will always be a need for your job!

Apple won't loose anything. Even they make 0 dollar from selling software if the user jailbreaks the iPad, they still make money from the selling iPad hardware itself.

This is an ongoing chess game. As for "winning" I know lots of people that make six figure incomes in the information security arena.
Loosers?

I know many people over the past decades that started in the "blackhat" arena, and then went on to run companies doing information security.
Loosers?

These people are currently designing the information security systems that people are learning how to attack.
Loosers?

If people that do information security don't "win", how come there has to be new exploits?

I'm obviously not understanding what it means to "win," or "loose."

Well, "loose" can be a transitive verb, so there can be "one who looses" or a "looser". However, a looser would be someone, for example, who lets loose the hounds, not someone who fails to win...

Edit: Honestly who would vote a post like this one down? This is simply providing information in response to the comment "if in fact it is a word at all". So, seeking to inform and educate is a negative thing?

Let's all live in ignorance! After all, ignorance is bliss, so let's all be blissful!

Hopefully this means an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak is coming for all A5 devices soon, too. I'm holding off on upgrading my iPhone 4S for that - and will likely get an iPad 4G when it is public, too.

ultimately though they will get more money if they have a claim to a known secure system.

Also who is it that gets it in the neck after PS3-esque attacks in the last year?

for the stress involved the gains seem less valuable.

At the end of the day as soon as your security is broken people tend to be less keen to pay you "6 figure sums"

now only if we could get the 4s jail broken...
