So, I picked a Verizon new iPad up launch day. Set up the 4g account that night and used it just like I did my iPad 2. Hooked to wifi at home and on cellular data duting the day for some lunchtime (maybe a little bit other than lunch too ;) )forum browsing, etc. after 3 days I'm up to 695 MB usage! This is using the log in Cellular Data counter. Using the one in General-Usage-Cellular data says 1.3 gig!

I guess I just didnt fully consider how much data it would take to drive the bigger display or something.

I typically will use the maps while I'm driving (have to travel a couple hours 1 or 2 days a week for work. I guess it's back to the iPhone for that as it is always downloading the highest res maps so you can zoom. Of course, driving by you don't need them. It would be nice to have a switch for it not to do that.

I'm going to probably have to up it to the 5gig plan to actually use this thing like I'm used to.

i would be interested to see the actual differences in data to pull up a map on an iPad 2 vs. the New iPad.....

There is a switch....flip off LTE in the settings and you will go to the same 3G speeds as your iphone.

Sounds like you need to just by a stand-alone GPS like a Garmin and save your iPad data.

That will affect speed, not data useage.

Yes, this affects speed, but if the iPad can detect a higher throughput and downloads a higher map quality because of it, if you step down to 3G it will download the lower res maps, thus using less data.

I'll try switching 4G off to see of that does anything and I'll report back.

A quick check seems to indicate Maps is still downloaded high res tiles, just more slowly.

@Sherifftruman: Have you considered using something like Navfree GPS and predownloading your maps in advance (on wifi)?

If you are heavily using your iPad for GPS, you may look at buying a GPS app such as Navigon which uses installed maps rather than your data connection. This would cut down on your data usage and would also work in area with no cell coverage.
