I too questioned the use of the Ipad when it first had its debut. I did not really see the point in owning one. All the things I use can be had on my smartphone or laptop.


Here was how I reasoned in not buying an ipad.

Music---Dont care for Itunes and hardly listen to music. I have an ipod that never gets updated with music. It just sits in my car and is ignored. I usually turn the radio on.

Video Games---I was a first adopter of PS3 and dont care to play video games. Never did. I just bought the PS3 to view Blu ray. I will admit I just bought FIFA 2012 and NBA Jam on my Ipad 3 just to experience the gaming aspect and I have to say I don't like the touch controls. Its very hard to get used to.

Photo Editing--- Not really practical on an Ipad even though its got the Retina display and iphoto app because it has too few GB for storage and transferring files into it can be cumbersome with the whole itunes account thing.

Apps--- The only apps I find myself using are Yelp because I like finding good places to eat and google maps for directions. I promise these are the two most frequent apps I use out of the so called million of apps Apple has. Also, use Pandora but not that much. I am liking Zite, however.

TV shows and Movies: Take too much space on an Ipad and hate waiting for it to upload to view. I would rather go to redbox and watch a blu ray movie in 1080p on my HD 50"+ screen, not a little square screen.

Newspapers and magazines---Never appealed to me to spend money on these things. The internet and forums have replaced these for me.

Social Media---I dont have a facebook or twitter account. Dont care for one either.



So you see...I dont have many reasons to justify purchasing an ipad.


So why the hell go out and buy one? Here are my reasons...


When I go to places, say the beach, shopping or out to eat I usually have to commute 1 hr. because I live in a very sad place that offers nothing.

During this one hr commute I let my g/f drive and I begin surfing the web and finding places to eat.

So to sum it up, here are the reasons I bought the Ipad 3

1. Its a nice piece of tech to own esp the retina, its nice to view. (Kool factor)
2. I surf the web much easier and is more fluid than my small smartphone.
3. It has a bigger and sharper screen than my smart phone.
4. The battery last a really long time unlike my smartphone or laptop.
5. Its a lot lighter to carry than my MBP 13"

So, I see the Ipad useful when you go on trips because you don't have to carry a laptop and worry about battery life. An ipad can last the whole day and some.

Is this a luxury? Definitely.

In what order of priority would I place it compared to a smart phone or laptop? Priority starts from left to right.

Laptop>Smartphone>Ipad

So if you own a laptop and smartphone and have the $$ to buy an ipad.

Go for it!

I always drive to my parents house and its a 2 hr commute. Taking my ipad with me will be much more easier because its lighter and I dont have to worry about plugging it in every 3 hrs like I do with my laptop.

I hope this helps you in deciding purchasing an Ipad or not. Remember there is no wrong choice in buying or not buying one.

I don't need to compile, but you can compile remotely with a little effort. I use it for writing small pieces of code when I'm in a rush. I mainly use the cut and paste feature of TeX equation to answer emails from my calculus students.

Also, I know you aren't questioning the level of programming I do. Thats making it personal. By "light programming", I meant writing code and keeping it in a text file on dropbox for compiling later on my laptop or desktop. The Matlab Mobile app also lets you compile from the iPad if you're on the same network as a computer running Matlab.

I don't really care if you buy an iPad or not. But it saves me a lot of hassle of bringing tons of books/notebooks/etc. to my office each day.

I mostly use mine for browsing the web, watching Netflix, and reading. It's definitely not something I NEED, but it is a nice luxury item to have, and I use it enough to get my money's worth.

One thing it does better than my laptop is the 9-10 hour battery life. My laptop gets 2-3 hours. It is awesome charging it over night, and not have to worry about it dying the next day.

OP, you asked what people can do on their iPad and then proceed to dis everything they told you they do. That is the definition of trolling IMHO.

But I'll feed you with one more post. I travel a lot, I take my iPad with me because I got tired of lugging a netbook all over the world. I watch movies, yes, I play games, I check my email, pay my bills, manage my bank and brokerage accounts, use FaceTime and Skype to keep in touch with my family. I find it invaluable for my life and my uses.

Normally I would say that if you can't find a use then it's not for you. Not everyone will find a good reason to but one. But I highly suspect that you're not really looking for uses, you just want to stir the pot, so to speak. So I hope you enjoyed the attention. If you're so bored with your life you might try getting out and making friends. You'll be happier.

Why do I need an iPad? For the same reason I'd need a laptop.. But the iPad is much more fun and intuative.
