rewind to: early mini esata cable hack

I know there are a good number of posts on this but I'm a little confused and would really appreciate a pointer or two.

I would like to dust off my mini (1.1 core duo) as a media server. I'm trying to decide if a esata cable hack is worthwhile for the external drive (not yet purchased) or if i just poke along with FW400 (no 800 on this era mini).

I dont' care to boot from the external just store music and photos.

Music and photos should work fine on a FW400 or USB connection.
