I see that some people don't understand that this display it's a lot much better than the current iPhone "retina" display
iPhone 4S: 640 x 960 pixels, 3.5-inch, 330ppi pixel density
Toshiba: 720 x 1280 pixels, 4-inch, 367ppi pixel density
At 12" viewing distance.Once you're past the point of transparency, where the pixels are so small you can't see them at any viewing distance, extra ppi doesn't matter.
330 ppi is already past that point.
At 12" viewing distance.
And the iPhone 4/4S is 326 ppi, not 330.
But enough splitting hairs.
Technically nobody holds their phone that close to their face.
It's typically 18", in which case 286ppi is sufficient to meet Apple's arbitrary "Retina" marketing term.
.
First... read my post completely. (You will see that I did state that 18" is pretty typical.)WHAT?!
I constantly hold my former 3GS, IP4, and current IP4S at roughly 12" - 18" away from my face, and from what I've seen many ppl actually do at a high percentage throughout the day:
First... read my post completely. (You will see that I did state that 18" is pretty typical.)
Second... if you have to hold your phone 12" from your face to read something, the screen or the text on it is too damn small.
Seriously... go get a ruler and stick it on your forehead and put your phone at the end of it. That's really close.
I have yet to see anyone with a phone shoved that close to their face for more than a second or two.
I'm basing my observations off of what I see at work. I suppose on a train or bus, you would tend to be more private with what's on your screen and naturally hold it closer. Dunno.Hmm. I did read your post 18" I cannot agree is typical.
I just held my phone as I naturally do (always have for 10yrs) and took off my shoe (10.5" but rubber, design, whatever I'd say is close to 12") - sorry no ruler at hand. phew stinky feet lol.
Well my phone is pushed out by an inch or two from the shoe. I read/compose emails this way, surf sites/forums, etc. daily.
I don't have 20/20 vision but not far from it (recently required glasses), and to me ... the high resolution allows for easier reading; to me. The text is actually LARGER to me this close vs holding the phone further away.
NOTE: 1 eye sees perfect up close, the other perfect far away (30ft range traffic signs are crystal clear to the 1 eye). So both compensate for the other at all ranges.
I guess my opinion is against the norm but I don't see anyone looking at me strangely when I'm on my IP4S; then again I see many communiters in Toronto holding their phones at the same range too.
WHAT?!

* Reading,
* Public transport (bus, subway, streetcar, light rail) especially during rush hour.
* Video calling (not just on FaceTime),
* etc.
It's a cellphone not a tablet and was intended for close use, that's why the screens are under 5".
LG has several screens that could satisfy Apple's iPhone successor needs.
4.67-inch 1280x768px LCD screen (LG LS970 will use this)
