What a Tall 'iPhone 5' with 4-Inch Display Looks Like

Earlier this month, iLounge reported that Apple is indeed looking to move to a 4-inch display in the next-generation iPhone by increasing the height of the screen while keeping the width consistent. With the report including a number of other specifics including measurements for the new device, we commissioned Ciccarese Design to produce some higher quality mockups of what such a device might look like.

As had been proposed in earlier speculation, a taller display could allow Apple to add one more row of icons to the iPhone's home screen, moving to five rows per page plus the row of pinned icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Increasing the diagonal measurement of the iPhone display from 3.5 inches to 4 inches while maintaining the same width as the current display adds approximately 11 mm (0.45 inch) to the height of the display. With iLounge's report indicating that the new iPhone's body will measure in at approximately 125 mm, which is 10 mm taller than the iPhone 4S, the spacing for the components above and below the display would remain roughly the same.

The mockup also shows a smaller dock connector as has been rumored by several sources, as well as a flat metal panel in the central portion of the rear shell of the iPhone, in line with iLounge's claims.

Ciccarese Design has also provided us with an interactive 3D model of this mockup, accessible via WebGL-enabled browsers. On OS X, Safari users can turn on WebGL by first navigating to Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar and then choosing the "Enable WebGL" option from the Develop menu that appears.

It should be noted that iLounge's claims have been directly contradicted by a recent report from iMore, which claims that Apple has yet to settle on a final form factor for the next-generation iPhone but that there appears to be no change to the aspect ratio of the display and that there will be no metal panel on the rear of the device. Both iLounge and iMore have offered accurate information in the past, and thus it remains to be seen which source is closer to the mark on this round of rumors.

After seeing the 4.3 inch Lumia 900, I'd like it in 4.3 or 4.6 inches.

Thumb resize.

prob not...

just imagine the headache of moving from a 4:3 screen to 16:9 for all of the app developers out there. at least retina was just a 2x issue...

I don't think it looks quite right being that tall. I personally hope they take another route.

Won't happen. The ratio will be the same. These mockups are nice and all, but there is no way they are going to make exiting apps ugly/shoehorned.

dont mind the front not the back and no need for a extra row of 2007s icon grid. use that extra space for some widgets and the brezel is wasted space

...

for one they will never do this. For two even if they did they would not keep the same amount of space above and below the screen they would shrink down at least the upper area so that the device wasn't to long as there is a ton of wasted space both above and below the screen on the current model

I may be in the minority but I really don't care about a bigger screen, PERSONALLY. I'm more of a software guy so I'm really concerned with the aspects of iOS 6 and how great that will/should be. Don't get me wrong, a bigger screen would not hurt but it's not at the top of my list.

Nice.

I see this working and I imagine them saying the extra length makes room for a larger battery. Naturally.

A bit larger screen might be nice, but I'm satisfied with my 4S. However, if a bigger screen only means the iPhone gets taller, and not taller and wider, then it's a non-starter for me.

They could fit a 4" screen like the one in the mockup in the current case without any problem.

Not appealing at all. I don't see the point of making the screen longer. I hope this rumor isn't true.

I see the Stocks app is now vital enough to be on page 1

A reminder that many current apps ALREADY scale vertically as demanded by the system, without the developer having to craft 2 UI layouts. When you’re on a call (or VOIP) the status bar doubles in height and changes color. For a great many apps, it doesn’t cover anything up; instead, the top controls slide down a bit and the central portion (often a list or scrolling view) shrinks while the bottom-most UI elements remain unchanged. The UI is considered as 3 segments, which adapt well. That central portion could, in theory, automatically scale taller if the system dictates as well. Not a solution for games, but for many apps it’s already doable with few fragmentation worries. (And even for games, black bars aren’t the worst fragmentation problem one could face.)

I like the idea of a bigger, yet still one-hand-friendly, screen like this. (Regardless of the specific details of this mockup. That silver back would look better as a band all the way around, so the sides and front also were silver in the middle/white on the ends.) Also this is nearly perfect for 16:9 video content on the go.

(P.S. I never played with WebGL before. Cool! Some odd black edges, but pretty neat to do without plugins.)

Ok.... now someone make a mockup of a 4" iPhone with the normal 3:2 aspect ratio.

What's the point of the different color metal in the middle of the back?

I don't like the design, but well done Ciccarese Design - the mock-up at least looks realistic.

And I'm not going to comment on what Apple will do - there are so many conflicting rumours about the sixth generation right now that it is just too hard to see which ones are the most trustworthy.

4-4.2

and a monster 5" (i know many don't want it but it will be the 17" MBP of the iPhone ... it has it's place! for those that want more a mobile computer as appose to phone)
