iOS 5, iCloud, and Snow Leopard?

i stil have leopard 10.6.8 but on my iphone4 im on 4.3.3 and not planning to update soon. i d like to see though whats gonna happpen 😛

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I upgraded to iOS 5 last night on both my iPad and my iPhone. My transition took forever, but everything transfered with only a few scary moments. DON'T UNPLUG PREMATURELY!!! I am still using Mobile Me, so at least I have some of the sync functions that iCloud will provide.

I'm highly disappointed that Apple is supporting Vista for iCloud, but not my husband's 4 month old MBP without the upgrade to Lion. Doesn't seem right that they would better support Windows than they did their own operating system. I think if they were planning to allow Snow Leopard to use iCloud, I think we would have seen the upgrade already. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to be supported and I'm not blown away with Lion, so I don't know what I'm going to do next June😡

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are asking but WiFi syncing between the latest iTunes on SL and my iPad seems to be working. At least it completes fine, I haven't tried moving any new songs, contacts or whatever over yet though.

Good info. Thanks for sharing. Yup, you would indeed think Apple would support SL if it is supporting Vista, that's for sure.

I am anxious to hear from anyone as to if wifi update will work, especially for iTunes, or not.

Just for the record I upgraded to Lion, however, before hand my iPhone 4 was wireless syncing with my iTunes on SL.

I HIGHLY suggest everybody who's annoyed by lack of Snow Leopard support for iOS 5 complain now - or get used to it.

Why I'm mad about lack of Snow Leop Support in iOS5

Personally, I'm absolutely furious about the lack of support for Snow Leopard in iOS 5.
Ironically: A simple solution would be to switch to Windows (heck a 5 year old Vista Laptop WILL do.).

In the past Apple has been quick to kill off "dated" technologies - but forcing folks to "Upgrade" to Lion (software that's only been out for a few months) just to keep their other devices current, is frankly ludicrous.

Folks have many reasons not to run Lion. In fact, many of us who use computers for something other than email and web, can't even consider the change at this point. This is particularly an issue for those who use Macs for business since Lion is simply not fully compatible with many current programs.

For myself, I would need to spend close $2000 to upgrade programs in order to move to Lion - and from what I can tell, they won't even run particularly well at this stage. Just as annoying would be the loss of some programs which are frankly irreplaceable at this time.

This means that in order to avoid obsolescence on iDevices that I've bought in the last 6 months : I need to make my primary computer less useful. How can Apple not even deign to not fully support devices for a single year.

Since Feb 26 of 2011 I bought a $4400+ BTO MacPro, an iPad 2, and an Apple TV (gen 2) PLUS AppleCare on all... All, (plus 2 laptops and an older MacPro) had be syncing flawlessly - making my entire computer experience a delight. Now suddenly, the joy ride is over.


MINIMALLY I should expect these very new devices to at least provide the same (or better) functionality as when I purchased them, the demise of MobileMe is bad enough (as separate rant on this later) for a year or two. But, expecting me to make my primary computer semi-functional on barely out-of-gate system software, just so I can reap the "rewards" of keeping my iDevices up to date, is patently absurd.

I imagine there are many others in the same boat, that unable to upgrade to Lion, will not make the move to iOS 5 in the near future. Which could lead to the same version mess that exists in the Android world.

I bought the iPad and ATV 2 with promises of a more developed AirPlay, something I will not get to experience. In the near future, I anticipate not being able to upgrade or purchase new Apps.

Thus My sudden recent interest in purchasing an iPhone has dulled. My intent to purchase an iPad for my friend's autistic son is on the back burner

Please forgive how poorly this is written - As one who's loved/grown dependent on my many, Apple products, I'm so bummed I can't think straight.

SL might not get iCloud at all

Folks, I was talking to a cousin of mine who works in Cupertino (in iPad software). Now, I'll disclose this right away: he himself doesn't know the facts since he's under iPad, but having talked to other software engineers on Apple's campus, he says it's unlikely SL will ever get iCloud.

The reason is that for iCloud to work with full functionality as in Lion, Apple would have to rewrite large amounts of code. It's not "as simple as changing a few lines in iCal to have it update with iCloud," he said. On top of that, the Find My Mac application, Documents/Data, Contacts, etc, all require changing fundamental code. That change was done and included in Lion from the very beginning of 10.7; the 10.7.2 update was nothing more than a "flip-switch" to "switch-on" the functionality that was already embedded. As a result, he says that it's unlikely that SL will ever see a "10.6.9" version that "switches-on" iCloud, since the reworking of the fundamental coding would be so big, my cousin joked, that they might as well release it as 10.8.

When I asked him why Apple wouldn't do that, he said that they obviously want to. But rewriting fundamental code changes the OS, and changing the OS can lead to a plethora of consequences and eventualities that they have to test out and iron out. He reiterated then, that it's not as easy as a "flip-switch... it's a really big change."

But, I'm still hoping that Apple releases an iCloud enabled SL. They really have to, and with $80 billion, I don't see any reason why Apple can't spend its money and resources in rewriting that code and bringing iCloud to SL.

I tried, I really did. But I cannot disable enough of the automated stuff in Lion. My main issues is the autosave and versions stuff I just find incredibly annoying, the far less useful expose, and some of the redefined gestures were just plain awkward.

So I went back to 10.6.8. Of course, now I can't downgrade to iCloud, though that'll be taken care off after the summer anyway...

But what I truly find almost offensive, is that my neighbor just signed up for iCloud on his 5 year old Vista dinosaur...

Perhaps you're right about the "Find my mac" function but the rest is BS. If they can create a stand-alone app to allow iCloud to work on Windows, they surely can update SL to do the same.

Unless you're telling me iCloud code is embedded in Windows! 🙄

Here is my dilemma... I had a Mobile Me account and was forced over to iCloud in the middle of moving therefor my iMac was not accessible for updating. My iPhones went well and running 5.1.1 with the iCloud services. My problem is that my iMac is running Snow Leopard and thus doesn't support iCloud. My only holdback/problem there is trying to access my email using the "Mail" client on the iMac. I have no problems with my other email accounts, but the mobile me "@me.com" email is giving me FITS. Finally it came up on the iMac, however I can't access any of the contents due to a "password" error. I've changed the password 3 times so far (not a fan of apples no reuse policy) and other than the headache of modifying the PW on all my devices, still nothing on the iMac. I have no problems accessing that email account on the other iDevices, just no go on the iMac. I'm tempted to jump up to Lion as Mountian Lion does perk my interest, but not a fan of all the bugs in Lion while still loving Snow Leopard. For comparison only can someone post the benefits/perks of Lion over Snow Leopard and/or the reverse? Pros and cons for each OS would be great if the users don't mind. I greatly appreciate any and all info/advice/tips y'all willing to share. I prefer to hear from "our own people" over the Office folks. Thanks in advance and Mahalo nui loa..

They could write a stand alone app like they did for Windows, it still wouldn't work with iCal for SL. Still not that simple.
