I have a 2011 iMac that has Lion installed. I just replaced the 1TB with a bare bones 3TB hard drive. I have a retail Snow Leopard disc that has previously worked great but when I press the Option key I can see the external hard drive that has my Time Machine backup and the retail SL disc. When I choose the SL disc the only thing I end up seeing the Apple logo.

I just booted off the same disc connected to a MacBook Air successfully. On the MBA the install of SL is working great.

I ended up formatting the new hard drive via Target Disk Mode.

Any suggestions on how I can get my Time Machine backup to the new hard drive would be appreciated.

That iMac shipped with a later version of Snow Leopard than the 10.6.3 (maximum) that would be on your retail disk. Only the original disks that came with that computer would work, not a retail disk. You can call Apple and order a replacement set if necessary.
