A new Apple Store is coming to South Loop according to a Chicago city alderman. The store, which may be coming to the Roosevelt Collection, would join flagship stores Lincoln Park and North Michigan Avenue as Chicago's third store within the city limits. Apple has seven stores in Chicago suburbs.

The story, reported by Crain's Chicago Business, quotes Alderman Robert Fioretti (2nd) as saying Apple was "coming close" to moving into the complex, located at Wells Street and Roosevelt Road.

Wow, the elements in that picture are so misaligned:
The ceiling and floor match up perfectly with each other, but they they need to be moved to the right so that they line up with the entrance.

Given Apple fixed alignment issues like this at the 5th avenue store (and others, I believe,) I would think they would fix it here, too. I understand that the 5th avenue store is a "flagship" one, but it seems to me that that just means it's bigger, not that they give others less attention per square inch.

It looks like that particular Apple Store is inside of a shopping mall. I don't think Apple has much control over the floor tiles that the shopping mall uses.

Anyways, the present Apple Stores in Chicago are beautiful, so I can't wait to see what they do with this new one.

You cant really tell the mall to move their floor and ceiling and align them....the apple store itself is aligned perfectly and symmetrically like always

Long-time lurker here. I happen to live in the same neighborhood as this location, so I'm familiar with the layout. The space is within a large retail/housing/movie theatre complex that was finished just as the housing bubble burst, around 2008 or 2009. So far, the theater is the only commercial tenant, the rest is unleased. As far as I can tell, most o te retail space is unfinished, so Apple would have wide latitude in doing what they wanted with it.

If this turns out to be true, the only unhappy person will be my wife, who thinks I shovel enough money into Apple's coffers as it is.

If it's where I think it is, then it's highly needed. It's a prime spot near a busy two-story Target. The complex is pretty barren though. You can tell it was meant to be a pricy retail area with luxury condos.

This will definitely boost the location. I hope the parking is still free for movies.

Yes, there was a rumor in April that they were in talks with Apple right after another list of retailers leaked. The owner of the space has apparently signed quite a few high end retailers:

Apple would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood and would place the Michigan Avenue store in the center between a North (Lincoln Park) and South (Roosevelt) location.

Is this picture from the crossgates mall location?
If it is I'm happy and I don't know why.

It's not. I just checked the store page on Apple's website. The floors of the mall are the same pattern kinda.

According to Asymco's calculations, Apple spends almost 10 million dollars per store on average for refurbishing. I am sure they can tell the mall to rip out the $10k worth of tiles if they wish. :)

Awesome I work in the loop, and hated going to the Michigan ave store with all the tourists ... Only good thing there was the eye candy.

I wish they would open a store in downstate Illinois. Maybe somewhere in the Champaign, Springfield, Bloomington area. Having to drive to Chicago / St. Louis / Indy from here is a haul just to go to an Apple Store.

A mall in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada is in the process of relocating one of its main sets of escalators, filling in a former two-storey open gallery in the foyer where that escalator used to be located, and demolishing/rebuilding the outer building envelope of the adjacent mall entrance. All done, apparently, to satisfy Apple's requirements for setting up shop in the newly-created space.

I love the Lincoln Park store. I bought my first mac there from a nice DePaul student who hadn't showered in about a week and a half. Such a great experience. And then getting on the Red Line with a Macbook Pro box. Amazing.

Yeah, it was more like a closet. That being said, the new campus computer store in the Union looks like it is going to be awesome, if you don't mind sharing space with PC people.

Austin needs a flagship store so bad. There's one mall store south of the city and an outdoor mall store about 20 miles north. they need a big one downtown.

That isn't an Apple owned retail store (as I'm guessing you already know). And I agree, it's pretty bad compared to a real Apple store. That said, I once bought Logic Studio Pro 7 Education edition from there for $150 (which was better than getting 10% off of $500 from Apple using an education discount).

I always preferred the Michigan Ave one since I shopped there before the LP one came out - although I lived in LP, I worked in the Loop, so it was easier going during lunch or on the way back from work to the Michigan Ave one. I did enjoy the external improvements that the Apple store did to the North/Clybourn area though.

Didn't Apple temp rent a spot downtown for SXSW a year or two ago? Surprised they just didn't stay there since I think it worked well. Maybe didn't quite fit their long term needs.

They did have a temp spot at SXSW. I guess they don't need a Downtown location because UT is near there.

This is the Apple Store at South Shore Plaza Mall in Braintree, Massachusetts. If you look carefully, you'll see why the tiles and ceiling are strange - just inside the right side of the door you see some sort of pillar/columns going all the way back. The tiles are centered to the standard width of the mall storefronts, which is from the left wall to the columns. The mall would essentially have to redo a third of their ceiling in that wing to get it to line up, and even then it would screw up the alignment for the rest of their stores.... then again, when I walk in there I'm usually too focused on what's on the tables rather than what the floor looks like :D
