Can a Mac with Mini-Display do anything with a Thunderbolt Drive?

I'm just wondering about thunderbolt compatibility with the older macs with mini-display. If I were to connect a thunderbolt drive to a mini-display port, could I still transfer data, all-be-it at a much slower rate?

No, as the Mini DisplayPort would not even see a Thunderbolt device, as you need a Thunderbolt chip on both ends (computer and device you want to connect to).
