Update for Retina Scroll Lag-How can u tell?

Dude..honestly just get over this lag bullcrap. ML doesn't just help, it helps TREMENDOUSLY. And it's going to get even better with more updates. Once ML is released all the apple stores will have it installed.

Thank god, someone with some sense. Yes, ML takes care of the problem completely.

Not "completely" as said in the anandtech review but it improves it a lot. Everyones has been saying how they feel Mountain Lion feels optimized for the Retina Macbook Pro. And again, It's gonna keep getting more and more optimized.

You're right. "Completely" was an overstatement. But some webpages with lots of flash, exotic fonts, etc. will have some lag no matter what machine or browser is used. That's just poor web design IMO.

ML is what Apple designed the rMBP to be used with, and it certainly shows.

Ya apologies for my tone, I'm just getting a bit annoyed of all the cry babies.
Mine is supposed to deliver between the 16th and 20th of June. But ya, I'm not sure if the store would update the macbook pro's. Obviously if you tried it yourself it'll ask for a password. But if they were going to update one they would have to update them all and I doubt they would do it. And I wouldn't know how to check if it is installed.

The fact that ML helps shows the issue is completely software related and can be completely fixed via a software update...

This whole issue is so overblown. It's the most minor of issues and I've had the laptop for a week and only noticed it once. Obviously it's a software issue, it's not like there's an internal problem with the laptop...

I tested a rMBP today in the store for the first time. Having read nothing at all about these issues, I noticed the unit having a hard time keeping up with many animations (swiping between spaces seemed to be the worst).

Minor issue due to fixes present in Mountain Lion? Perhaps to us folks that are in the know. To a general consumer, they could see this and think, "gee, for $2200 you'd think it would be smoother than my POS Dell at home."

I don't get why Apple didn't just hold onto the rMBP until ML is ready if it is that big of a difference. It would've been easy to say, "Available July 20th" (or whatever the date is for ML) and move on. Instead they sacrificed user experience to meet an artificial demand that they manufactured. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot...

Ya I wondered this as well. But they will get updated within a month and it'll be fine.

Yes. I am running ML and everything is as smooth as can be.

It's just short for Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8. It's in beta until next month but devs and other invited people have access to it.

Yes. RMBP is a fantastic machine, esp. on ML.

When I updated my machine, it was a special trackpad update. No version number change or anything.

The Apple Store retina demo models were showing lag.
It was easy to see just by toggling Safari between windowed and full screen mode.
The sliding desktop would stutter.

Once I setup my own rMBP and installed the updates toggling is now smooth.

As far a lag scrolling in Safari, on pages with heavy images it is sometimes noticed, that is supposed to improve with 10.8.

Like the original Macbook Air and original iPad this is a version 1 product that by the 2nd and 3rd generation will be greatly improved, but I'd still take todays retina pro over any other.

This seems like a common report and I wonder if it has something to do with the demo apps they install on the Apple Store machines. I tried testing the theory by quitting all those apps and things seemed a bit smoother, but it's hard to tell if that's simply the placebo effect.

I'm not noticing any major lag when scrolling on my 2.6ghz rMBP. I've done normal and higher speed scrolling on multiple sites that have complex elements, including FB. How fast are people scrolling? At normal reading scrolling speed there is zero lag.

PS - This is both with optimized screen resolution and the normal way I view which is 1680X1050 scaling.

Reviewed in UK Mac Store today and not seeing any lag at all

After reading about this issue on this forum, I was very concerned and stopped putting my order through till I checked myself. I just can't see it. Went into local store (UK - Southampton), and put the rMBP into highest resolution then went searching for the lag. I could not see anything aside from amazing smoothness and speed. Went onto various image and animation heavy websites in Safari and it was all dramatically faster than anything on my existing kit. I then played around with multiple applications open, switching between them, running full screen etc. All instant stuff. Very relieved.

No idea if any patches had been applied, but certainly not ML.

DISCLOSURE: I am a PC W7 user at the moment on an HDD based SandyBridge I5 laptop, so this may have coloured my impression coming from a low baseline experience .

Essentially, though, I could not find the issue at all - also looked faster than the non retina based model. I am in agreement therefore with Trey below. My order is now in - over to the light side I come.

I know my iPad 3 with retina display doesn't like techcrunch.com for some reason. I can repeatedly cause Safari to crash by speedily scrolling around on their front page.

Go to the Apple menu, tap on About This Mac, and then tap on More Info...

Look for this build number: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2620)

That will indicate if it's had this update applied.

The lag seems very intermittent.

Mine is terrible however even minimising and maximising finder shows lag, not impressed at all becoming ever so more tempted to install ML beta instead. I hear this fixes some of the problems.

I am however waiting for a replacement to be sent out to me for an entirely different problem (rattling,creaking inside)

It will continue to improve. You can count on Apple focusing mainly on the retina capabilities from here on out when it comes to Mac OS X. Afterall, why would they release a new product, which completely shakes up the notebook industry (once again), only to starve it of essential updates and optimisation.

You'll never get silky smooth performance, just like with the new iPad, as the screen tech is way ahead of anything mobile processing can handle right now. Give it a few years and I'm sure you'll have that silky smooth 60fps scrolling on Facebook
