kernal_task at 726.8mb

hi guys sort of a newb to mac osx lion. as title suggests my kernal_task is at 726.8mb and seems to climb the entire duration of my usage.

computer in question is a late 2011 13" mbp

i have searched for answers but cannot find any at all, and now am starting to worry that my system may be failing

0 kernel_task root 1.1 69 726.9 MB Intel (64 bit)

thats what it is at present.

can anyone shed some light on what to do
