Playpad. Music stave instrument
Hi, just thougt I'd mention our 69p ipad app called 'playpad' which we've worked hard on.
It's a simple but effective concept in which you play tunes, chords or whatever you want in treble or bass clef on the musical stave and is great fun if not a little geeky!

I'm jealous of all you drummers here; that was my first instrument, but these days (living in apartments) I can only play things that can be used with headphones.

Yep, two bedroom apartment and I sleep in the living room (one bedroom is for the music studio, one bedroom for the photography studio.) It's one of the reasons I moved from expensive L.A. to cheaper Portland; to be able to buy a house, but it's not happening yet...
Love the D-50. I'm a big Roland fan.
Drastically slimmed down? Holy crap. I'm digging the JP-8000, the Nord Lead and the theremin. I wish I could afford a JP-8000; I had to settle for a used SH-201 a couple of weeks ago.
I know what you mean by having to use headphones; my wife would trash my setup if I didn't use them.
Speaking of which, I've posted a couple of rather crappy pictures of my small setup. (Pardon the mess; I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to rearrange all the wiring with the addition of the aforementioned SH-201.) My synth rack:
- Top row: Yamaha AN200 desktop synth/drum machine, Yamaha DD-50 drum set (I use it as a MIDI drum trigger).
- Middle row: Roland XP-10.
- Bottom row: Realistic Concertmate 200 (Radio Shack's version of the Casio VL-Tone, a gift from my father-in-law); two MIDISport USB MIDI interfaces; Roland JV-880 sound module below those; Roland SH-201 analog modeling synth.
- At bottom center: M-Audio O2 USB MIDI controller, on a separate stand so I can move it closer to my desk.
Over on my desk, to the right of my iMac, is my audio interface/mixer setup, a simple combination of Tascam US-144 interface and Peavey RQ-200 six-channel mixer. I use Roland RH-50 mixing headphones and a cheap pair of Roland MA-8 monitors on the occasion that I do get to play out loud. Plugged into Channel 1 on the Peavey, but not pictured here, is an Audio-Technica AT-2020 mic for vocals.

You're not the only horn player on here. Here's the horn I'm trying to sell through Ken Pope in Boston, a Paxman 75 triple. One hell of a horn, just not one I need anymore.

Good for you! I sold mine after less than two years, always thought it sounded somewhat thin and shrill in the midrange.
While learning jazz on guitar for the past few years, the only true jazz guitar players I know who can get around jazz and work with others really well both play all the horn instruments, so I want to take up the trumpet. I noticed that Yamaha stuff is really pricey. It also helps a jazz guitarist phrase a solo like a horn than getting stuck in guitar-ish scales.
How is a $400 dollar Conn trumpet for a beginner really learning a horn to help me understand jazz guitar? ... (like my two teachers who are guitarists but also do horns, piano, and of course read music).
Also I want to swing with Eb and Bb instrument(s) and Eb/Bb sheet music since that's what backup instruments like guitar often have to work with and not stuff written in concert C.

I just ditched the rack, in attempt to take up a little less space. It's finally coming together...now I just need more cymbals!

That's a nice set. Do you have a crash and crash-ride or is that two crashes you have with hi-hat? I used to have set with very small crash-ride and I never pushed for the expensive full sized ride that I should have acquired.
Hey, does anybody here have an advice for beginner jazz guitarist learning trumpet? My teachers and the good jazz guitarists I know all play at least a trumpet, sax, or flute. It's probably not a bad idea to understand a lead instrument to help be a backup comp instrument like drums, guitar, or bass.
What's a good student trumpet?
These horns cost so much more than guitars so I don't expect to pay many times of what I do for guitar (my jazz guitar is just a $400 street price Ibanez), so is there anything under $1,000 for a trumpet? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
I also looked at sax but those things are way out of my league.
