Hey,

I am trying to sync a folder on my desktop with a folder on a USB drive. Simple, right? RRiiigghhhtttt.......

I have seen several programs that (may) do this, but all of the ones that I have seen are $30-$40. I have found several free programs that do something like what I want it to do, but miss the mark by "that much" (for example, Transmit will sync, but only with a network drive). The closest I found was an Automator action, but for some reason the synced items were three seconds apart from each other, so every time it would just re-sync the entire folder (which defeats the purpose).

Are there any free programs that will do a simple sync between two folders?

I picked up FileSync the other day off off Cool OSX Apps and it did the trick for me. I'm able to sync files from my mac to my AirPort Disc. Might be worth a try.

Sweet, thanks! That works! (most of the times... I am sometimes getting that "Disk Full" error...)

It's timed out on me a few times going to the AirPort Disc. I did find that you should add your files/folders to the list, then exit. That way if it crashes you don't lose all that work you just did building the list.

Grysync

I use this graphical interface for rsync:
grysync
I synced 40 gigas between macbook and wlan hard drive without problems
great tool, thanks

Can you give me an idea of how to use rsync

Open Terminal app and type "man rsync" (without quotes) and you will get a manual for rsync. Just type "q" to exit the manual. Scroll down through the manual and it is very complete with examples.

I know you said free, but the best app I've found is Synk by Decimus Software. They have educational discounts that, if you qualify, bring it down to $10. I highly recommend it.

this is a hard thing to do.
Anyone have any updates or softwares for making it happen?
Personally just want to mirror a few working folders to a ftp.
if it did the folder sync automatically every day at a specific time, that would be great.

I think Forklift allows FTP syncing.

Interarchy does FTP synching, and allows you to set a schedule for virtually any task. (select the Mirror FTP option and set it as a scheduled task, which you can set to any time of day you choose - I'd recommend just after start up or just before shut down.)

It's not free, but it's a real time saver if you have several web sites to keep up to date.
