Handbrake problem :(

Is there a problem with the original video? Maybe a part that appears scrambled when you watch the mkv? Could be something is causing handbrake to think the video is done such as a bad original encoding.

MKV file may be corrupt. Even if the file is corrupt sometimes they still may appear to play fine. I have had this happen once or twice. I manly have seen it when a file has been transferred between a lot of drives. So their may not be anything you can do. I would double check and see if any other files do this. Probably not much you can do.

This happened to me a couple of times - never happened before - when encoding War Horse. Third time I queued it up, it worked fine. Weird.

I DLd a nitely tonight... It wouldnt run

went back to previous version that has run for a long time. It wont run.
Scrubbed HB restarted Mac DL again, full version 9.8 IT WONT RUN.
Starts the file, then immediately says encode done.... Whats going on...

One possibility is that the mkv file has too many streams, such as different language streams, subtitles, etc. If you parse the log file it will tell you why it stopped encoding. When this happens to me it is usually caused by too many streams, so I have to re-rip the blu-ray without all the extra streams. You can also remux the mkv file with fewer streams.

The problem persists on 3 sept am.

It even occurs on files previously generated by MDRP with creates a video file. This file is normally accessed by HB and encodes to MKV without a fuss..
On the nightly site this am, the normally downloadable file is not downloadable... ???????????
This behavior is just since the 429 DL of the nightly. That file seemed somewhat large. over 7mg...???

SOmething is fishy here...

OKAYYYYY !! Come clean time on my end..

FIRST.. THERE is likely NOTHING wrong with the nightly updates or HB as has been inferred above.
I do not yet know WHY it happened nor the depth of the problem, but here is what I do know.
It DID start after I DL the latest nightly DL, couple days ago. Now, having said that, I also have started using the apple client server network in ethernet form to send completed MKV files to my laptop that goes out to the big screen and the AVR in the media, well ok living room...sigh.
So in desperation and finding HB no longer worked for me, even from a disc, I often source it from an MDRP file on my hard drive, I clicked the get info link on the sub directory that is the destination for the HB encoded file, an MKV file.Much to my surprise the proper sub directory shows in the right window of the get info screen, but the name is greyed out! The disc is prefectly useable, I can read it, I can get info as to capacities, etc. BUT noticed the SHARED box was check marked. This is ok because as stated above, it is a shared folder with my laptop via ethernet connection. Because the name of the sub directory is greyed out, I am now supposing that when I try to encode something with HB, HB cannot find the directory and instead of reporting a bogus directory, it just pops to encode finished in about 5 seconds. BTW all is well except during the last few days I dumped all my hard earned setting, my fault I know, when I point HB to a higher level directory on the same disc, EVERYTHING WORKS as NORMAL.
SO TO WRAP UP, something has gone amiss with something and I shall find it, BUT IT ISNT HB NOR THE NIGHTLY....HB WORKS FINE when I point it to a directory it can find, which seems to be ANY but this greyed out on.

Here is what happened in my case

When I was using the ethernet connection to send the MKV files to the laptop, I got weary of entering long computer names, names assigned years ago when I hardly ever needed to type them. Now I am typing them almost daily. To eliminate that pain in the butt, I changed the computer names and PWs to very short ones. The exchanging of files worked great... HOWEVER, I did not go back into the permissions area of the subdirectory that has been the target of HB and enter the new password and give it read/write permission. The instant I did that, the greyed out subdirectory name became bold and black again and HB now finds it as it always did.
WELL, we learn by doing, dont we?? Good night all...

After the recent update, HB starts fine and after a moment says it's done. The source is 110 minutes and the destination is not. The latest update overwrote the preset settings, but I'm using the settings for AppleTV as before.

Any help appreciated...

While I'm sure that's a great suggestion, it's worked in a single step for a couple years; I'd prefer that. Any other ideas?

Possibly, change the dvd-video setting in preferences.

reno3000 I meant to paste the log into a site like pastebin.com and put the link they give you back here.

that is an awful lot of log to put into a forum. Just for future reference.

had it been decrypted?

would indicate you are trying to open a blu ray right from HB. HB cannot decrypt blu rays.

handbrake question

as a total neophyte, I thought I could just edit my old home video, which I had transferred to DVDs, on iMovie. I should have known life ain't so simple...
So I learned about handbrake, and used it to transfer the dvd to my hard drive in what I thought was the appropriate format [I used the defaults] only to discover that I can't get IMovie to accept it as a new project and I can't get Quicktime to play it....I get a message that it's not in an accepted format. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

So, you used HB to convert into MP4 or M4V (NOT MKV)? Which profile did you use - Normal (the default) or High?
