I don't use social networks, so I tried to get rid of the social widgets infesting many webpages nowadays. They take a long time to load and they pose privacy concerns. In the last few months I've been using a really good open source Safari extension called Shellfish:
http://open-bits.com/shellfish/
It works fine, but I wanted to extend its effects to all the browsers I use on my machines (especially my old eMac, where getting rid of social widgets causes a marked improvement in loading speed). Plus I wanted to block some of the javascript code associated with widgets, which isn't blocked by Shellfish.
That's why I created this Glimmer Blocker filter. It is based on:
- the CSS sylesheet contained in shellfish
- the iCab social widgets built-in filters
- a few rules blocking the javascript code on the Shellfish example page:
http://open-bits.com/shellfish/examples.html (try to load this page with and without the filter on ! )
- a couple of rules blocking javascript code I picked up here and there
In my not so extensive tests this should not break the websites associated with the blocked widgets. If you are experiencing problems try to selectively disable the rules. Remember to empty your browser cache before using this filter (when I tested this on Lion I also had to stop and restart Glimmer Blocker for the filter to work properly).
Let me know how this works for you.
