White 64 gb. Pretty good size dent at top left corner where mirror bevel meets Al band. Will not return as rest of phone fine but I am surprised at poor QC.

I've been peeking in this thread and taking a look at the pics and determining what I would do if my iPhone 5 had come out of it's box looking like that. With yours sir I would have undoubtedly taken it back to an Apple Store or called Apple for a replacement. But if you're fine with it you're fine with it.

is anybody going to wait a couple of weeks and see if the build quality improves before getting their phones replaced ?

Yes I've decided not to get it replaced until quality improves when apple address the issue. I went to apple store today regarding manufacturing scratch on shiny edge on black 64GB model. They offered replacement handset - which had blemish around sides as well as dent. So again apple genius brought one more replacement to find it was also carrying scratch on edge!!! bummer… after all that, i decided to keep my original handset and left the store really disappointed!! I mean i understand heavy demand in manufacturing for these shiny things but this is not acceptable! Specially when Sir Jonathan Ive talks on video about their iPhone 5 manufacturing process and say that now they are checking for errors in level of microns!!

To those who got a replacement, did Apple replaced from the new iPhone 5 boxes or did they pull out like a small box with the iPhone 5 on it that probably look like when you're getting a refurbished one?

When I went to get mine replaced they won't get the one from the new boxes but instead pulled out one in those little boxes. I was surprised they have those already on launch day  I don't think they're refurbished though anyway especially this early. :p

LOL. Refurbished? it's been out 3 days. It makes more sense to have these NEW ones set aside rather than exchange boxes, accessories, etc. when the phone itself could be exchanged alone.

Same here, they had different white slim boxing, carrying only phone in it, like other refurbished replacements. Sadly they brought two of the iPhones out for me and those handsets had defects too!! I chose not to get replacement at this stage and walked out!!

PS: replacement handsets can't be refurbished at this stage. but if a lot of people are going to get their iPhones replaced for manufacturing defects. then soon apple will be carrying many refurbished :D

Should I have my iPhone replaced for this or am I being too anal?

Personally, I'd keep that model if I were you. You could risk getting one with bezel damage/some other kind of issue.

That speck is kinda tiny :p But hey, different people have different levels of what is/isn't acceptable :) Your call.

Would you exchange it if it was you? I am having trouble deciding it because if i go swap it i am afraid that those units were are also defective or worst than what i have

i have a dent on the edge as shown in the pic below, but in the picture it looks small. if you look at it in real life it looks a bit dent

It is real shame that apple did not make phone of titanium alloy or metal ceramics at this price point. I understand that greed makes world go round, but making customers a bit more happy would create positive carma for steve and apple :)

Would have been nice but way to cost prohibitive and wasteful from the standpoint that the lifecycle of a smartphone is so short, won't speculate what it is but its far from what my submariner is which uses ceramics etc..

This is the typical Internet effect. One person mentions a tiny issue or imperfection, then has everyone going completely OCD trying to look for problems. Finally you have an epidemic. I have dozens of bare aluminum and anodized aluminum things in the house. From handguns to MacBooks, not a single one is free of such tiny nicks you folks are obsessing over.

News flash, aluminum is soft.

The fact that most of these photos I need to zoom in to even see the "problem" tells me this is mostly Internet hysteria.

News flash, Apple should have NEVER used aluminum for a smart phone. Laptops are a different story.

Going Friday to the apple store to my white iPhone 5 swapped out came with nicks and scratches around the chamfered edge gonna let the stock resupply a bit in hopes that the stock is better and less chance of out of the box damage

Thought I'd add a little perspective given that chances are that we are all tech geeks on this site. I posted earlier because my wife's white ip5 had a 2 inch scratch across the back, pock marks or specks of glue/apple logo gloss all over the back, a nick near the speakers, and a blue antenna divider on the white phone. Her immediate reaction was that she wanted a refund and to keep her 4S. We were very much on the fence about upgrading this year because selling our old 4Ss would not even nearly cover the non subsidized price we paid for both 5s. I mailed our old phones out to Amazon the day before the new ones came in. Unlike me, my wife doesn't have the same need to have the latest and greatest. Now she's pretty upset out of principal but it's too late to get her old phone back. I cleaned her 4S up before sending to Amazon and I must admit that it was actually in better condition than her 5 out of the box. I'm going to be the good husband and drive an hour out to the Apple store, but we will definitely be skipping next year's update and I will never preorder from Apple's first batch of anything again. It's much harder for me to say "See, isn't this phone so much better than last year's?" when her phone looks a damn mess. On the upside, I love my black ip5 regardless that it had imperfections too.

Related....inside my EarPod case was a long black hair!!! All the way from China!

Both Earpod cases that came with my wife and I's phones looked dirty in the box. I don't care cause I'm not even opening them... Will leave them alone for resale value, since we have really good headphones already. Though, looking at the cases, I'm pretty glad I won't be putting those in my ears.

Not a single scratch, scuff or imperfection on my White 32GB Verizon iPhone 5.

Here is my unboxing video to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_1jixFkmNc

No EarPods imperfections for me. Here is my EarPods unboxing video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo-IO6LXl8w

Cool for you. Please shoot more videos. Do you have a video of the first time you checked your Facebook on the iPhone 5? Can I follow your videos? I want to stay in touch with your iPhone 5 and watch it more.

Hi everyone. I'm based in London, England and would like some of your advice. I picked up my 64GB black iPhone 5 on Friday direct from the Apple Store (6 hour wait in line) sim-free. I checked this post out whilst waiting and I was concerned after reading about scuffs etc, once I got mine home I had a good look around the phone and I'm happy to report that I have a flawless iPhone 5 in terms of the cosmetics, now the screen on the other hand is a different story. I have a bit of screen bleeding in the lower right hand corner (iPad 2 style) and 3 dead pixels. Two of the pixels are green and only show on a bright black screen on the bottom left hand side and one is a black dot on the right hand side visible on a white image ie safari grrrr. Now as the phone is perfect otherwise is it a good idea to return it for an exchange or just be cool with it? Keep in mind that I just paid out £699 for it straight up. My thinking is to wait like a day before my 14 day return date (05 Oct) so I can actually enjoy using it instead of returning straight away. I don't want a Genius Bar refurb either, I want a brand new, sealed retail unit. From my understand this should be cool but seeing as though these phones are like gold dust at the moment that might be difficult. Will calling apple care to log my issue help in terms of getting my a new boxed phone or do I need to keep calling my local apple store to check stock? Thanks in advance.

scratched Iphone 5 black

Here we go, I am posting a pic of my I5 black 64 gb with one single scuff mark without paint on the upper corner. I got it from an AT&T pre order delivered Friday at about 7 pm. Yesterday I went to a local apple store and opened 3 new replacements, all with scuff marks. The store did not have more replacement phones available. I am planning to get back there this week, if they don't solve the issue I might just keep my old I4S or get a Samsung S III.
