Wall Street Journal: Apple Has Begun Mass Production of the iPad Mini

On the one hand, I guess it's great that the iPad Mini will have Lightening. On the other, the only advantage it offers is that its more compact. Can somebody please explain to me why they didn't make the Lightening cable USB3? I mostly sync over wi-fi of course, but when I need to transfer a LOT of data between my Mac and iDevice (and this does happen occasionally), it would be so handy to have USB3 speed Lightening! Now that would have been something to really justify the adapter size change!

Yea... How come there isn't at least ONE news agency trying to find out what's happening with the Macs? I mean, come on... what's going on with the world today? This is beyond ridiculous! 🙁
 
I don't doubt that this is coming out, but I am puzzled as to how Apple can differentiate itself from all of the other small tablets out there. I suppose this one will be a battle of the eco-systems. "Not as good a screen as xxxxx, but better apps."

I think it's pretty clear at this stage that Apple are sitting on something BIG with the iMac's. The only possible reason that I can why Apple haven't updated the iMac line in five hundred and something days is because there are supply chain problems with retina screens (which has been rumoured). I think any week now we are going to see totally redesigned, thinner Ivy Bridge iMac's with retina displays, USB3 and other cool stuff.

Though I am not the poster you are replying to, I am afraid that Apple is done with the iPod Classic 🙁 No updates in years and I seriously doubt that there will be any in the future.

Same here. I need to buy a desktop machine. I'm even considering moving my dev environment to Ubuntu so I can get an up-to-date hardware.

+1 I can't get the iPhone5 until I get a new iMac so I won't be buying the Mini iPad either... before a new iMac.

If the rumors are true then what I find weird is the screen resolution and ratio, 4:3 and only 1024x768, why not 1920x1080 to give it 'full HD' resolution in 16:9 format?

I don't know. What I do know is that there will be lots of people on MacRumors complaining about wifi issues, bluetooth drop-outs, scuffs, scratches, dents, camera purple-fringing, terrible Maps app, lack of accessory support and with no adaptors available, while millions and millions of people will buy them as Christmas presents either for their kids or for themselves, and will be absolutely happy with their purchase.

1. iPod Touch and iPad are completely different devices. Not the same market. iPod Touch is a music player that is also a portable games machine (like PS 2), not a tablet. I can't put an iPad 7" in my shirt pocket.

2. iPod Touch sales are millions per quarter, which beats lots of well-known products like XBox for example, but sales are tiny compared to what an iPad 7" would sell. So even if the iPad 7" price would hurt iPod Touch sales, Apple wouldn't care.

I really am hoping that this is true and that the price will be around $300. I am so going to buy it. Even if it lacks the "retina" display.
 
Ramping up production, well going on normal production increases, they should have have at least 20 ready for sale on release then.

If it's reasonable value for money, we might consider finally buying a tablet.
 
Because there weren't many leaks of parts, etc, I was beginning to think the iPad Mini wasn't going to happen- at least not in the October timeframe. Now, i'm thinking it's more likely than not that it WILL.
But it will be interesting to see how this product prices out compared to the regular iPad AND the newly released touch. Hopefully, that narrow sweet spot somewhere in the middle!

The new iMac screen will be as thin as the notebook screens.

Lol...well they definitely needs to be thinner than they are now. Those new HP all in one's (Spectre One's) although being total iMac ripoff's do look ultra sexy thinness wise.
 
Larger phones, smaller tablets. What's with Apple striving to match the competition lately?

Will NOT buy this.

there are so many of the iPhone 5 taller-screen leaks and during that time, so many people still say not going to happen. But it happened.

Now, this isn't-going-to-happen thing occurs again for iPad mini
 
Who says they're ONLY doing this to be competitive guys? C'mon, we know that Apple usually only release products that they believe the user will absolutely love and find compelling. They pride themselves on that. It may not suit everyone, sure, but it will find a home with many kids who love gaming and also people who use their iPad's primarily for reading books. See the thing is, I was always a huge supporter of 10" tablets and would never have considered anything smaller. But lately I've been thinking of my own usage habits. With my iPad, basically ALL I do on it is consume text, images, do some banking, watch some videos occasionally. The main apps I use are Flipboard, iBooks, twitter, Facebook and Wikibot. That's about it. Seriously. So for people like me, who do most of their work on their Mac and only use the iPad for reading in bed and some other tasks. THIS is so much more comfortable, practical and perfect. As I said, I will definitely be buying one on one condition. It MUST be retina.

Good insights. Thanks. Having considered your comment, I've just crossed buying an iPad Mini off my wish list entirely. So Apple would definitely be foolish to move ahead with this now.

I reckon it will be the same resolution as the iPad2 or iPad 3. Hopefully the retina screen of the iPad 3 but more likely the 1024x768 of the iPad 2.

I can't see Apple going for yet another resolution without giving developers more notice (either officially or leaking like they did with the iPhone 5, which was only a minor change in one direction and didn't affect pixel density). And they don't want to end up with Android like fragmentation in terms of screen resolutions.

1024 x 768 wouldn't be too bad on the smaller screen. It would mean 50% more pixels per square inch, which isn't exactly retina but should look better than the full size iPad 2. If you rule out other resolutions then the only other choice would be a screen with 50% more pixels per square inch than the retina iPad, which would be great but probably expensive, and therefore less likely IMO.

Is there a market for a mini? For example, is there anyone out there with an iPad who wants a smaller screen? Especially if a typical ipad user also has an iPhone?

1/10 : Tim Cook Thanks Apple Employees for Outstanding 2012 with Extended Thanksgiving Vacation Time: "In a little over six months we’ve launched outstanding new products in each of our major categories, starting with the new iPad this spring." The iMac is no more a major categorie i suppose....
