13-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Starts at 128 GB Flash Storage, Mac Mini Goes Quad-Core

9to5Mac reports that it has received information on three models of the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro launching today. According to sources, the machines appear to use the same 2.5 GHz and 2.9 GHz processors found in the non-Retina models, and like the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro all of the 13-inch Retina models start at 8 GB of RAM.

Unlike the 15-inch lineup, however, the entry-level 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro will come with 128 GB of flash storage, with higher-end standard models moving up to 256 GB and 512 GB of storage. The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro starts at 256 GB of storage.

Pricing on the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is said to start at approximately $1699, a $500 premium over the non-Retina model. For that premium, users will receive a Retina display, 128 GB of flash storage instead of a 500 GB traditional hard drive, and a bump from 4 GB of RAM to 8 GB. The Retina version of course also comes in a thinner form factor that omits the optical drive and Ethernet and FireWire ports.

The site has also received details on the new Mac mini models coming out today, with the high-end models now moving to quad-core processors. As with the existing lineup, there are two standard configurations and a server configuration.
- 2.5 GHz dual-core, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard drive
- 2.3 GHz quad-core, 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard drive
- Server: 2.3 GHz quad-core 4GB of RAM, 2TB Hard drive

The new Mac mini models should retain the current pricing and gain build-to-order RAM options of up to 16 GB.

I only want Apple to release an updated iMac so people on here will shut up already.

I'd be shocked if the Mac Mini got an update before the iMac. The mini always seemed to be somewhere along the backburner with the Mac Pro.

Or maybe.. just maybe, the Mac Pro and iMac are coming out and Apple built them in-house to keep others from leaking something revolutionary!

I'm just hoping they bumped up the graphics ram in the mac minis... 256mb doesn't do much these days....

This is good news. Given that the 128G SSD likely costs Apple less than the 500G GB platter drive, and yet sells for more, Apple should make great margins on the machine.

If it is anything, apple is innovative!

$1699 is steep. The 512 Retina SSD model could be then close to $2500. I don't see too much benefit in the retina screen on a notebook for me. So I hope there will be non retina versions available.

My only real question now is if that hard drive in the Mac mini is 7200 RPM standard or if that's still the slower 5000 RPM drive...

You are becoming a joke Apple. This is not a "Pro" product at all. Just a gimmick.

The rumored $1699 13" rMBP starting price doesn't really makes sense if it only comes with 128GB of storage.

That would be paying $400 more than for the equivalent 128GB/8GB RAM 13" MBA just to get a Retina display and a non-ULV processor that costs the same (both $225 OEM price).

The premium for a 13" rMBP over a 13" cMBP would also be higher ($500) than for a 15" rMBP over a 15" cMBP ($400) even though I'm pretty sure the Retina display in the 15" is more expensive/harder to make, plus it gets 256GB of storage which is considerably more expensive than 128GB. A 128GB SSD at this point isn't even that much more expensive than a hard drive.

I don't think Apple would have a significantly higher margin on the 13" rMBP than on the 15" rMBP. I have a hard time believing that. The specs may be wrong, the price might be wrong, or we may get a discrete GPU after all.
