Sprint today became the last of the three major U.S. iPhone carriers to report financial results for the third quarter of 2012, revealing that the carrier sold 1.5 million iPhones for the third straight quarter.
The Sprint platform postpaid subscriber base grew for the tenth consecutive quarter, with net additions of 410,000 driven by a postpaid Nextel recapture rate of 59 percent and best ever third quarter churn. Sprint recorded approximately 1.5 million iPhone sales in the third quarter with 40 percent representing new customers. The company also surpassed 1 million LTE smartphones sold prior to the launch of iPhone 5.
The steady results for Sprint appear to be something of a disappointment for the carrier given the launch of the iPhone 5 near the end of the quarter. Earlier this week, AT&T reported a 27% increase in iPhone activations compared to the previous quarter while last week Verizon reported 15% sequential growth.

Apple will report its earnings for the third calendar quarter of 2012 at approximately 4:30 PM Eastern Time today, with a conference call to follow at 5:00 PM. MacRumors will have full coverage of Apple's announcements.

Their network performance is just not competitive in much of the country. No matter what phones you carry, customers want a network that gives decent performance.

Sprint data speeds are bad in a lot of places.

I work in different cities each week, and when data speeds are fast they're usually fast in the surrounding area as well. But if an area is slow, it feels like all the towers are connected to the internet via dialup.

I am very interested in the total number of iPhone 5 should in the third quarter.

Hopefully they will release those numbers.

Sprints 3G network is just so slow. Despite competitive pricing and unlimited data, their iPhone numbers are a lot lower than I expected.

I wonder how successful an official iPhone would be on T-Mobile? Wonder if it would be more successful than it is on Sprint.

I dunno, having tasted LTE goodness, I for one wouldn't go back, even for a better price.

I seriously considered switching to Sprint for my iPhone 5 but ultimately chose Verizon because of network quality.

It should be 1,499,999 iPhones sold, since I returned mine! :D
1,499,498 then, cause I did the same thing.

Where I live they have terrible service, often reverting to roaming data (read: SUPER slow, like 0.09Mbps DOWN) even in the middle of town.

Still waiting on my Verizon iPhone. I'll tell you it was painful going back to my Samsung Fascinate after having that iPhone 5 for two weeks...

I still hate Apple for many of their business practices, but dang can they make a great phone! :D

Sprint 4S here and after a year with Sprint I've been pretty happy with it!!
Unlimited data is great for me!! I live in a small town with 3G and it averages about 1 mb/s down and about .7 up. That's pretty good but I've traveled around and now have seen the terrible speeds people have gotten!! In Cali I've tested it in certain areas with speedtest and it would give up and just display 0 down and like .15 down!!

The reason I did go with sprint was for their prices and unlimited data specially cuz I didn't have Internet at home but now that I do I'm probably gonna cancel and go with straight talk since I'm probably not gonna use that much data anymore!!

I hope the SoftBank does something about the data cuz I'd like sprint to compete with the big 2

Sprint LTE rollout way behind

I have the iPhone 5 on sprint, the 3G is horrid no matter where I go. I finally got a taste of sprints LTE and it is 1000% better. Really fast. But there rollout is so far behind all the other carries who knows what AT&T and Verizon will have new by the time sprint finishes their late rollout. I've been with sprint/ Nextel since the 90's and I stay because the overall pricing is good and in have always had good customer service.

That number is to be expected with Sprint's shoddy 3g speeds. Good thing is that i now have lte coverage most of the places that I go, and once that is complete and they still retain the unlimited data, people will come in droves, because data consumption has nowhere to go but up.

Part of Sprint's LTE rollout is completely upgrading not only to LTE but also completely replacing every single tower setup in the entire network.

They are upgrading to 800Mhz CDMA to improve building penetration and they are doing a great job of rolling out the LTE in each city as they get to them. By this time next year or so they will be completed and will have very good coverage again like they used to.

I live in Chicago and I could not stream anything initially with my iPhone 5 when I got it but they started the rollout shortly after and my 3G speeds went up to around 1-1.5 Mbps on average and now I get LTE pretty much everywhere I go except where I work on the lakefront. With LTE I get anywhere from 6 Mbps to 30 Mbps depending on proximity to a tower.

All in all they stand to have the best coverage here in Chicago once they get 100% complete in Chicago. Right now they are around 60% or so.

When I was in Chicago the LTE speeds were excellent. I can't wait for that at home in Minnesota.

Re:

If we talk about iPhone users who are really disappointed with the service performance then Sprint comes on the top. Many users have been complaining about various problems that sprint offers i.e regarding data speed and network performance and the disappoinment level is really very high. I can’t recall a time when Sprint had a profitable quarter.
