Simple Announcement Page

I have been tasked with the creation of our local Fraternal Order of Police website and I am needing some help. I am also an active member fyi. Anyways we are needing a simple website, nothing flashy or highly styled, just a web presence. I plan on doing a simple two column that is styled with css. Within the site we are needing a members only announcement page. We have no need for a full blown forum, just a simple restricted access page that can announce meetings and other important information. Can anyone provide me with some ideas? I'd like for the login to be available by hovering over the text "login" or perhaps just visible on each page.

For you I'd recommend a wordpress site: famous 5 minute setup, tons of tutorials available, plugins(free if you look hard) to accomplish the login thingy.

just trying to help

PS there are about a million ways to accomplish what you are asking, I only provided one so that you can get started and get your page complete. Once you are 'live' you can research other ideas and then compare them with what you already have learned. Then it will be easier to decide on which solution is best.

All of this could easily be done with custom html5(page framework), css(page styling), js(page effects - hover/click lightbox login) and php(server side member verification, checks database to see if username and password match and are eligible to view restricted pages).

I've tried wordpress before, but I felt that it wasn't quite what I was looking for. We won't be blogging or adding new content on a regular basis, it's mainly going to be a web presence available for our community and surrounding area. At most i'll be adding a lightbox photo gallery of our events, but that'll be about it for content. Of course it'll have an about page that'll be styled identical to the main and a news and upcoming events page... Any other suggestions?

I would also recommend that you use wordpress. Although you are not going to be regularly updating content it is quite simple to use and even setup just a one page site. You can change the default to make the landing page a static page instead of a blog.

You can use this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/member-access/. To do the member only access, it is free and really easy to setup.

There are ways to do this without a cms which you might think are simpler, but will actually be more difficult to implement because of the fact you want people to login, you would have to create custom databases, and know php or a similar backend development language to implement what you want, and judging from your post, you do not want something complicated.

I will give that a look! I've tried using Wordpress with a past project and was really impressed with its capabilities, but I was also overwhelmed by all of its advanced features.

Thanks again

There is a vast amount of documentation, and we are all here to help. No harm in stepping outside of the comfort zone.
