File Renamer (based on exif) Recommendations

What is the preferred program to rename a batch of files based on exif data? I am a recent convert to OS X from Windows, and on that platform I used Bulk Rename Utility. Googling around has produced numerous programs, some freeware, some not. I am hesitant to drop $10 on something that might not be what I am looking for.

thanks

One of the most powerful is a command line tool called jhead available on several OSs.
