Some of those could be buying it because their home computer was destroyed and they need a way to hop on the city wifi to let family know they aren't dead etc

and remember that 5th Ave is a huge tourist store. what happened doesn't have the personal connection to those folks.

Of course the white are more popular. They look just like the Galaxy Note so folks that can't afford the more expensive and better item are getting the cheap and tacky Mini to avoid being mocked like in the commercials

Given that they are near ground zero and probably didn't get their full shipment I'd say the probable 800-1200 units is pretty good

How dare they have a marathon right now. All those people should be helping clean up, not running a stupid race.

Are they going to end it at 5th Ave so folks can finish off by buying an iPad mini

I stopped off at my local apple store to check out this fancy iPad Mini... and I noticed something very interesting:
Apple has the iPad Mini and the iPad 2 all together in the same area and the iPad 4 with Retina & iPhone 5 quite some distance away.

Not only that, but the iPads that they have next to the iPad Mini's that display information, pricing and specs are old ass iPad 2's without Retina Screens.

Apple Stores are playing it smart by keeping the high res screens completely away from the Mini.

The minute I stepped away from the iPad mini and onto the iPad 4, I made my decision and walked out of the store.

I was REALLY pushing for this iPad mini, but not this round. Maybe next time.

Technically, you're correct, but based on previous product launches, you don't truly believe that, do you? Anyway, we'll know soon how many they sold, when APPLE posts their sales figures for the first weekend.

Oh, please. We pull corpses out of the water all the time here in New York City.

But seriously, 8 million people, 40 dead, a couple hundred thousand without power, 65,000 of those restored today. I live 15 minutes away from this Apple Store, and while the hurricane was devastating for lots of folks relatively close by, for me and millions of others it was just a little rain and some strong gusty winds.

Disgusting, you say? Lots of shops are open for business in NYC, many since Tuesday and Wednesday. It really seems like you're just looking for an excuse to be mad about anything pertaining to Apple, yes?

Creating the impression of short supply, when you control the largest electronic supply chain in the world is, well, kind of ballsy.
Call me naive, but with an initial roll-out in 34 countries, and more to come, I somehow doubt that APPLE is 'sitting' on inventory, just to create an artificial shortage. Not being able to make 'm fast enough sounds like a much more plausible scenario.

Well of course the isheep flocked to buy. I'm not getting a mini until it has retina screen I predict they are going to release a retina version in march or April. And I will laugh at those who rushed to buy it now.

Internet capable devices (phones mostly) like the iPad have empowered this generation of people unlike any before it. Social media has helped revolutionize the mideast.

Besides, why not apply your 'don't buy an iPad - feed the homeless' theory to evening? Do you buy your kids a toy or two for christmas? How dare you? You should instead use that money to feed homeless kids. Don't go to movies either, or buy an ice cream cone, or do ANYTHING more than what's absolutly essential for you to survive, and use the REST of your resources helping the homeless!!!

They don't. Apple doesn't want a single customer to walk away empty handed, esp. when it's an impulse purchase product. Do individual stores like to have a visual inventory tracking system so they can tell customers exactly what models are in stock? Yes. That's why they have the cards.

I agree the mini seemed non- innovative & lacking. But, personally, after I played with one I had to have one (already have an iPad 3). I wasn't a champion of 7" tablets. I am now. The mini is gonna be huge -- but unfortunately at the expense if the low end iPad 4 models. And I really don't know why anyone would want an iPad 2 anymore.

With a number of Manhattan Apple stores closed due to lack of power, one would assume that the mini would sell out quickly at the 5th location.

OR maybe ...

Apple said OK we can manufacture a million iPad Minis for product launch; How many countries do we have to launch the product in to make it appear that demand for the product is high and the product is sold out everywhere

Gotta love all the holier-than-thou *******s making comments about waiting in line after a disaster. They must be posting from their phones between hammer strokes as they help rebuild houses.

Or while they wait for their next porn video to load. What a world we live in.

Wow good for you! Do you feel better about yourself now? Will you feel proud sitting in your mom's basement with your shiny new stunning retina display iPad mini while the dredges of society suffer at the hands of the hideous, vile non-retina version?

Why people care what others spend their spare money on is just mind-boggling. Grow up.

Meh, maybe that is your only store, at the Eaton's Centre downtown store in Toronto, the iPad mini was the first table on the right hand side as you enter in with the Retina 13" MacBook on the left side, the iPad 4th Generation was at 2nd table on the right side of the store, so the Retina products aren't exactly far away.

I don't think they updated the display information iPad at all as the iPad 2 serves that function just fine. For all the Apple products around the store.

Not being biased despite owning many Apple products over the years ..Macs..iPads...Touches...Phones....this guy has succinctly summed up the new Apple philosophy. I didn't think they'd go downhill so soon after Steve Jobs sadly passed away ... But they sure are making up for it now ... Not good.
